Need help. s13/j30 lsd

I had taken the lsd center section out of a j30 an put the 4.08 ring gear on it. Put that back in the 240 rear end.The short/left half shaft goes right in, the longer/right shaft goes in all but about a quarter inch or so. We were messing with the 240 half shafts an put them in and the diff works as it should. So what should i do?
