I removed my timing chain guides on my DOHC KA. Put everything back together, set timing and everything was fine! I drove home and about 15 miles into the drive, there was a bad tapping/knocking sound. It also wants to stall everytime I stop.

I also forgot to disconnect the TPS when i set the timing. What effect would that have?

What should I check, what could it be?

the chain may have jumped. this is not likely but its the first thing i would check.

if you did not disconnect the tps then you just set the timing to something way off. its probably very advanced. i suggest you reset the timing and hope you did not do permanent damage. if you did we will help you through it.

I set timing correctly(I'm pretty sure) when I did it this time(TPS disconnected) it was very close to the same as last time(within 2 deg.) The knock is still there. It is only at certian RPMs. 2000-2300 is 1 spot, I didn't rev it higher than that. it sounds like something hitting something. That is the best way I could describe it.

Which guides di you remove? hopefully not the lower guide oppisite the tensioner guide. Did you properly torque the cam and idler gear bolts when going back together? Those are all I can think of unless your chain jumped as Chris said. If it did It could be a valve hitting a piston.

I did remove both upper guides(top and side). I assumed that was ok since many otheres had done it. I did not diassemble the cams or idlier. I only took of the valve cover, distribtor and top portion of front cover.

I did everything in this post except, I adjusted the timing wrong

When I adjusted the timing correctly, It was the same as before I disconnected the TPS.

I was reffering to the lower chain guides not the upper ones. I know on the upper chain you can remove both the guides.

get a screw driver and listen at different points to try to locate the noise source.

Yea you take a long screw driver and place the tip of it against different places on the metal surface of the engine while placing your ear on the handle end. This is like useing a stethescope. You do this till you find the point where the noise you hear in the screw driver is the same noise you hear with out it. When you find the point at which its the loudest in the driver handle you are right on top of the noise source.

its basicly load everywhere. a little less on the very back of the valve cover. I only did this on the valve cover. I may be a little louder between the spark plugs of 2 and 3.

Try listening on the head as well not just on the valve cover. place it between the runners of the intake on the head itself not on the intake manifold. See if this helps isolate it. BTW this is an old trick for listening to engine noise. The newer method is an actual stethescope like I have for litening to engine and chassis noises. If you are still unable to isolate the specific source try pulling one plug wire at a time while its making the nose, see if this will affect the noise at all. Since this was on set after you did work to the timing chain there is a good chance no change wil be heard by pulling plug wires off. Also since you state you might thing the noise is around 2 and 3 cyls there is a chance the chain did skip and that is valve contact your hearing although I am not positive of that at this point. noises are hard to chase using another persons description of them as I may describe the very noise your hearing differently. You understand what I mean?

I understand what you mean. I will try listening to the head. Thank you for your help. I think I might take it to a mechanic that does my normal work and ask him to listen to it.

My mechanic says rod knock! New motor time! I have another question. Can an S14 KA be installed and run fine in a S13? I don't want to have to do anything else.

ThanksChad

I believe so as long as you use the intake and exhaust manifolds from your s13

OBDII doesn't make a difference as long I am only swaping the motor itself?
