well guys, im a long time fan and former owner of a 24o, however now i drive an o2 altima. Im looking into getting a 92 24o hatch that is clean as can be, however has some minor mechanical problems. I figured with me being a bit rusty, and you guys still having these cars, you'd be able to help me. The car's valve cover gasket is leaking, however its been leaking for so long that its developed leaks in multiple places and has cause further problems:

1. Valve cover gasket leak2. All belts are swolen from oil and need replacing3. Plugs are clogged from oil and need replacing4. Front crank case is also leaking (no cracks, but leaking?)5. Tie rod bushings have swolen and bursted and need replacing (which is now allowign water into tie rod assembly)6. (not related to leak) but the odometer and speedo are both dead (im assuming new gear in odo. and speed cable?)

Other than these problems the car is immaculate, and i would only be paying 15oo bucks for this car (93k actual miles/1 owner). I brought it to Nissan to have a tech look at it, and between parts and labor, they want 17oo to fix it ALL. I know i could do most of this (if not all) by myself, with an FSM. If anyone here could give me an estimate on how much this would cost, or ANY advice, it would be GREATLY APPRECIATED. thanks in advance guys, sorry for such a long post- Rob

I would first say that 1500 is a bit much to pay for a car with all those problems....1000max is what i would pay.If you can't change belts have someone else work on the car...The valve cover gasket should be real easy...but i think it costs around 50-75 dollars. its rubber and pretty easy to figure out.

well #2, and #3 are easy fixes imo

#1, make sure that it is in fact your vc gasket, the threads in your cylinder head for the vc bolts could just be stripped. that was the case on mine. see if theyll tighten before you you buy a new gasket

i have no idea about 4 or 5, $1500 seems a little high to me too.

well we're negotiating price right now, but all of the belts and whatnot are all easy fixes, the only thing i see being any type of problem is the crank case (and i have a welding machin, so that too isnt too far out there). And it is indead the vc gasket and nothing else, atleast thats what hte certified techs at nissan said. I had a buddy of mine tell me we could do all the work for less than 35o-4oo bucks. And i know u guys think its a high price for hte car with lil knick knack problems, but u really should see it, its gorgeously clean, no rust anywhere, no leaks on the hatch or anythig. Other than the problems i mentioned in my first post its perfect. But thanks for the quick advice

The only thing on there you may not be able to do are the tie rod bushings. You may have to pull the tire rods and have a machine shop press the bushings in for you. The rest of that looks pretty easy. Probably not over 200 bux in parts. You should be able to accomplish all that urself in an afternoon at most. Go ahead and buy it.

yea i know. I already paid 8o bucks to have it inspected (adn if i get anything fixed, that 8o bucks is put toward that) so i think im going to have them fix the tie rod bushings and such now and do the rest myself, thanks for hte confidence
