I have no compression in my 1st and 4th pistons. Is my motor completly ruined? How do I fix this problem, how much will it cost me? Someone please help, Im trying to start my motor for the first time, and I found this problem. Any ones suggestions would be greatly appreciated.:(

How do you know that you have no compression? Did you compression check this with a gauge?

I am not trying to insult you, but I don't know you or your skill level.

If you checked it with a gauge, check it again. If you still come up with nothing. Take an air hose and hook it directly to the cylinder. Can you hear air coming out of the exhaust, intake, or block?(make sure that the valves are closed when you do this.) That will allow you to figure out what is bad, intake or exhaust valves or the rings. More than likely you would have bent or burnt intake or exhaust valves.

I concur. Do that leakdown test (I think its called that), and listen for air comin out the exhaust. To be more specific, you hook compressed air to a nozzle that screws into where your spark plug would screw into, then fire the compressed air in there. You should do this whent he piston is at the very top of its cycle, hense the closed valves (i think). If air is coming from intake or exhaust, you can determine the valve theory.......

Also, be sure to pour some oil in each cylinder through the spark plug hole and let it sit overnight. The last SR I bought, I compression checked it and was getting like 20 psi in one cylinder. F#%K, i thought. Well, I pour some oil down in each slug, go to bed, wake up, checked it again, and the same 20psi cylinder now had the HIGHEST compression reading of like 160psi. So, I guess it was just some gummed up rings that were stuck to the piston and not making contact with the cylinder wall. The motor has still been running well the last 10,000 miles ever since. Just a thought...

Thank you guys so much for helping. I was talking to my mechanic last night and he said he put this speical kind of oil into each of those holes. He said if that doesnt work than its gonna cost big bucks to get it fixed. Im hoping the oil trick works. I really appreciate it that you guys are helping me out. Its always good to know their are some good people out there and on this website. ill post a reply later today and let u guys know whats going on.

Thanks again,

Charlie

I called the guy yesterday and the 4th piston is getting a reading of 60psi. Before it was at zero now its at 60. So i assume that the oil trick is working. But the 1st one is still getting no compression. He put more oil into it and let is soaked overnight. Hes gonna work on it today so ill let everyone know. Hopefully im not screwed. Thanks guys for listening.

Where did the motor come from? many of them have startup garantees.

Also you are turning the motor over with the starter right? you can't compression test by hand.

I bought the motor from a guy in Miami, he is also doing the installation himself. He was gonna use his motor for a turbo datson. Instead he sold it to me because He is moving out of his small *** house. He sold it to me for a really good price. He started the motor but only 2 cylinders were working so it sounded like ****. He said the motor came with 30 day warrenty but he has had the motor longer than then because I sold most of the parts and upgraded them. We are still trying to get all the cylinders working effeciently and ill be sure to let you guys know whats going on.

dude, if you add oil to the cylinder and the compression goes up, you have a problem.most likely being piston rings. but a leak down test is a better test. Not only will it tell you if the cylinder is leaking, but from where in the cylinder its leaking.

Did they properly diagnose it? Is it bad rings, burned valves, or ?

My mechanic said that it still wasnt getting compression. I think he told me it was the rings i really cant remember ill have to double check. When i get the motor back ill take some pics for you guys and show u whats up. Itll be in my driveway till i can come up with 700 bucks. The motor starts really good though so i dont think it can really be the wiring. Also the injectors are covered in fuel and everything else seems to be working fine. I guess I learned my lesson from buying from a private seller in Miami. The engine is upgraded though. I got t3 turbo upgrade, external wastegate, upgraded headers, and downpipe and all that other good stuff. Maybe he did not due somthin correct? Im not sure. I really dont know who to take it to, i really dont know anyone else who lives near me with an sr20 that could help. If anyone out there who is an the ft. lauderdale area (sunrise is where I live) please email me at [email protected], maybe we could meet up and you could help me.

Thanks everyone
