Oooh I had a very similar problem not too long ago. It turned out the wires connected to the alternator had burned almost completely off. After using an ohm meter to test voltage at every source and in-between it turned out to the connections at the alt. I completely replaced the two main ones with 8-gauge amp wire and shrink-wrapped connections and haven't had an issue since.

OH! I noticed that within a couple of minutes while the car was running that the one hot wire on the back of the alt was extremely hot, before I fixed it. I drove a few miles from college one night and headlights got dimmer and dimmer until the car completely shut off.

Hmmmm sounds about right...where do these wires go, i see a red/white wire and a yellow wire coming from my alt to the transmission harness where is the other side of these??

Ok so i have checked and rechecked my wiring on the alt side of the connections and the ground and power on the car side, idk where the two other wires connect to the chasis or other components but i was wondering maybe its a fuse or a voltage regulator issue instead...could this be my problem????
