The lower part of my rear bumper is faded and I was wondering what I needed to touch it back up.

Take it to a bodyshop and have all the silver lower trim all around the car painted black....really updates the look to modern times.

Go to an autopaint store and buy a rattle can of "Trim black" or maybe "Bumper Black." The color and sheen of these two choices is perfect for black plastic trim. 3 cans at $5-8 per can will do all of the lower trim.

I've used this paint on the mudflaps on my 99 and if you apply it properly it does not come off-even after scraping the avement at 50 mph!!

I completely agree with the purists who say take it to an automotive paint shop and have it done. If you have a couple of hundred $$ to spare get her done. But realistically, we're in the middle of a recession, money is tight for some, and there are other options.

I just got finished rattle can painting the rear bumper horizontal surface on my beater Q and it turned out very nice. If your lower trim piece can be removed it would be much easier to paint on a bench rather than laying on your back in the driveway. The surface you're painting is small so it will be easy to mask off on the car.

I used automotive spray paint that didn't require any priming. Do rough up the surface to give the paint something to stick to. I used 800, then 1000, then 1500 grit (wet sand) prior to painting and 1500 grit (wet sand) between coats. Top it off with a couple of coats of rattle can clear coat, buff and shine, and it'll look like an auto paint shop job.

The paint must have an elastomer in it. And yes, you must prepare it first.

Do not use a primer underneath the paint you choose. The paint will chip and it will reveal the gray or red primer that you used.

Just clean the trim with dishwashing liquid and water and then acetone or auto paint prep cleaner and then use BUMPER BLACK!!!!
