Hello Everyone!

I have been working on a 1999 Nissan Quest timing belt change. This is my first time replacing a timing belt and I am glad that this car has a non-interference engine. I have tried timing this car 5 times and the car either didn't start or idles rough. Right now, the car starts up fine but idles rough and makes "boom" sounds at the throttle body. The RPMs will not go past 1500 RPM, which is why I suspect the car has bad timing. The cam located closest to the firewall is the hardest for me to time. I cannot see the marks so I feel it with my hand. Once I get the marks to align, the cam bounces back a tooth and goes out of time again. Can any of you give me some tips on how I can time this vehicle?

Thanks!

Hi, welcome to NICO Club!

I'm not an engine tear down and rebuild guy... yet. But if I was, I'd be sure to be using the Factory Service Manual... http://www.nicoclub.com/archives/use-ni ... abase.html

As far as seeing things like timing marks, I'm not sure what your issue is. Got a truck in the way? Pull out the engine and get a better viewing angle! Or, just get a mirror on the end of a stick and look using that. Maybe you need better lighting? I'm pretty sure you will be using timing marks to set your timing, so seeing them seems pretty important. I've done it with distributor parts, but not belts and cams. Again, I'm not an engine tear down and rebuild guy. Perhaps someone who is will see this and chime in. Best of luck!
