Have a 1994 J30 that will not stay running. Trouble code reads 55. Would like to keep if possible, car has 301,200 miles. Been set on fire, repaired. we have been through alot.

J30 will turn over, runs for ten seconds or so, idle will jump to 1000, then spits, chugs, and die. Replaced plugs, half tank of gas. Tried starting with MAF senor unplugged, and same result. When idle jumps I have tried giving it gas and dies right away. Any thought would be great.

The engine will not run for very long with the MAF unplugged, as after the ECM figures that there is no air being drawn into the engine, it concludes that no fuel and spark are required either.

There are components that will fail, not yielding any codes. A cold engine should start with an immediate idle of about 1,500 rpm.

How does the air filter look? Possible fuel starvation? Code 55 is all systems are good to go.

Thanks for the reply, will check on the filter. The car dies when I give it gas, plus it will not start with holding the gas down. Does not smell like its flooded, was thinking maybe fuel pump. Any thoughts?

Has the car been sitting long?

How many miles since the last timing belt change, compression check, and fuel and EGR systems cleanings?

The car sat for a week, started fine. Drove two miles to work, then problem started. Due for a timing belt, egr, and fuel filter. compression check unknown.

Engine compartment, passenger side, lower rear corner, sort of behind and below the power steering reservoir. Should be bare metal silver in color with two very tough-to-remove hoses connected.

Remove the system pressure and then loosen the gas cap before disconnecting, on a cool day, and clamp/plug the fuel lines while it's disconnected.

The engine will idle on only four cylinders (possibly only three?) and start on five (maybe four or less?), so it's bound to be something that's affecting the overall supply of fuel, spark or air to the engine, if there's compression.

300K miles. Very impressive.

Thanks for the tips, will try tomorrow after work. Will try to post pics of the fire damage. Want to keep the car going to pass on to my son.

If you are going to disconnect the old one, you might want to have a new fuel filter on hand to install.

Air filer looks good. Going to replace fuel filter, how is the fuel pressure relieved? Is the fuel filter on the strut tower?

Pull the fuel pump fuse and crank it for 10 seconds or so to relieve the pressure.

Is there any kind of relief valve? Wifes car had one that looked like a valve stem from a tire.
