Okay, well, I don't have anymore money to waste on mechanics pretending to know what is wrong with my car... I just need it to run correctly...

It starts pretty rough sometimes, like the idle is at 400 or something, sometimes it wont even start at all. Once running it is usually okay, however at stops, sometimes the idle drops and the car feels like it is gonna die. From every stop I leave, black smoke comes out the exhaust and the car almost always smells like gas while I am driving. At a stop when I first touch the gas pedal, the car shakes a little, but when I press it further down, it is fine... It is like the gas is blocked somewhere and not flowing correctly..

I did the routine checks as far as connections, plugs, wires... changed the fuel filter and my mechanic changed the fuel pressure regulator, but the ecu is not popping any code and my mechanic doesn't seem to know what he is doing and I am tired of paying for things that don't work.

Anyone have any ideas? Ken [email protected]

check colant temp sensor and air flow meter. probe the wires on it with a volt meter. one is 12 volts one is 0v and the other will be what the air flow tells the computer. at idle that wire should read around 1.3 to 1.4 volts. if it is much higher then that you may have a bad airflow meter. your coolant temp may have corrosion in the connector or is just not registering properly. inspect it good.

AFM is good, problem still exists, however I took your advice and poped the CTS plug... lots of like greenish corrosion in there...(Why is that?) I picked up a new CTS sensor and should have a new plug coming, but is there anyway that I can clean the inside of the plug to see if it makes any difference? What would you recommend? Also, a few people have told me to check the TPS and it would lead to alot of my symptoms... what do you think? One last Q, Would the CTS corrosion make it so my car wouldn't even start at certain times? Thanks for all the help!

clean it with battery cleaner, spray can you can get at any part store, use a pick or pocket screw driver to help scrape away the corrosion in the plug. the corrosion is cause by water getting into the connection usually from the rubber boot tearing on the back side of the connector. fix this first and see if it is all it needs,if not then go after other potential problems later. yes it could prevent your car from starting under certain conditions.

Okay, thanks... by the way, I noticed you are in NorCal, where are you located? Are you a mechanic? If so, where is your shop? Thanks, Ken

I usually go to Keith's Auto up here in redding, but since I sold my celica and went with a nissan, it seems as though they have no idea where to begin with my car when there is a problem... It seems a tad out of the way, but I would be willing to drive down when I have a problem to sac, as you seem very knowledgable and I think in the long run I would save money as you actually know what you are doing and aren't going to charge me $215 for something that you "think" MAY fix the problem. (which they tried, didn't work, and now I am out the $215) Anyway, there is a Nissan dealer here, though they seem kind of... well... rude to say the least. Anyway, what is the name of your shop... oh, and what is your name? Thanks, Ken

could be a vacuum leak thats cause you car to stall when you stop. i had the same problem with the stalling and it ended up being the egr gasket on the intake manifold.
