Hey guys - I just got a CD burner for my PC (I know, I'm a few years behind the times).

I want to download some music and make some CD's - What's the best place to go to? I looked at the Kazaa free service, but apparently it's a PITA to use... Is this true? Is there a better place to look?

I heard Kazaa's P2P service had been shut down anyway... Kazaa Lite was awesome, but I haven't used it in a while and I'm not sure it was still up. I've never tried Winmx, so I dunno there, good luck!

Kazaa will fug your PC up.

You want WinMX, combined with the awesome power of NapMX. (go to http://www.download.com and search NapMX)

Once you've added more servers, you can go to the OpenNap Networks tab, right-click and select all, then hit connect. You'll instantly have about 50x more options.

That or you could go to http://www.shareaza.com and have the power of gnutella, edonkey2000, and gnutella2 at your disposal. Combine it with WinMX, and I'll be damned if you can't find what you're looking for.

Watch out on those though, a lot of times those programs are loaded with spyware/ad-ware... don't get iMesh for sure, that screwed my computer up real nice... I was referring to Kazaa Lite in my initial post too. That's what I used to use, worked great, and I could find most of what I looked for (and I looked up some obscure crap).

I have been playing around with iTunes. I prefer it over Napster and Rhapsody, which you have to pay for monthly subscriptions. Napster adn Rhapsody have more of a selection than iTunes, but I like buying something tangable that I can keep on my computer.

I still use Kazaa on occasion, but it keeps wanting me to upgrade to version 2.6. I am currently running 2.0.2. Should I upgrade or not?

WinMX says they have no adware/spyware, and it looks like it'll have MORE than enough stuff for me - I just wanna make some good driving CD's, and some stuff for the kids to listen to as well.

I have found some drawbacks to using gnutella software are:

1. Songs are mis-labeled2. Songs are ripped with poor quality3. Songs stop halfway through

UPDATE - I FINALLY started doing some downloading... Using WinMX, hope I'm doing it right.

First song I burned? "Intergalactic" by the Beasties. :)

Still testing the waters, might have some more questions for the "pros" here pretty soon.

Seems like I can't find an available source for an album I'm looking for... Each time I re-do the search, I get VERY different results. This is all VERY new to me.

VMaN - I looked at it, but the comments on adware and other "port-opening" components scares me. New PC, and if it goes down, so does my income.

I had no luck with Ares personally... don't fret it AZ. WinMX should do you fine.

I use a primary connection on winmx because i have cable internet, and I get mp3's on average at 40-150k a second.

I've downloaded probably close to 250gb worth of stuff on winmx over the past 2 years(currently only have about half of that still I think :) )

For a 700MB CD, that's like 19kB per second. Pretty slow. Your connect speed is only half the equation. The server/network speed from where you're downloading can slow things down. I know some businesses offer free downloads at slow speed, and faster service if you're willing to pay for it.

Robert,

By my math, that's actually 1.94 kB/sec. Since he'd be downloading MP3's, it would be about 70MB worth of stuff. If that takes 10 hours then:

60x60x10=36,000 seconds70/36000=.00194 or 1.94 kB/sec

At any rate, yes, that's super slow.

Nick :)

Greg,

Get Soulseek: http://www.slsk.org

You can download whole albums from there pretty fast. I think all they do is music though, so p0rn has to come from kazaa or winmx.

I use Kazaa for video / programsAnd WinMX for audio.

Kazaa isn't as harsh to me as people make it sound... My computer runs fine with it, and I often get over 200 k/sec because of my share rating... So I like it pretty wellUsually if I can't find a song on WinMX, Kazaa will have it / vise versa. There is a free version of the original Kazaa from the website (routes you to a download.com link)

I think my slow DL was due to my share rating- I don't have anything to share and I didn't allow access to my drives.

I'm a taker, not a giver. :)
