after i'm driving for a little bit the car starts to "buck" and there is a noticable loss of power. also, the idle rpms drop down and there is a lot of rich smoke coming out the back. i've changed the coolant temperature sensor (because of ECU code 13), replaced the fuel filter and threw in a bottle of fuel system cleaner a couple of times. the fuel system cleaner seems to get the car to run fine for about 50 to 100 miles but then i'm practically back to where i was before. any suggestions where to look first for problems?

That sounds like a clog somewhere in the fuel system... the easiest thing would be to replace the fuel filter, I believe. I'm not sure where exactly the filter is on a 240. Some cars, its easy access. others, it's inside the gas tank, in which case, its a pain. But if it's pretty easily accessible, I'd definately check that out first. That's probably the most likely culprit, and it's pretty cheap to fix.

The fuel filter is in the driver's side of the engine bay. Right there in plain sight, and easy to get to.

hmm, yep cts, if bad, would cause the rich condition u r talking about... ecu sees the engine isn't warm & would compensate by opening the injectors longer...

u might want to check if the injectors are leaking internally. disconnect the fuel rail & pull the assembly w/ the injectors still attached. then turn key on but not to start the car... see if injectors are leaking.

did u clear & recheck trouble codes after the replacement of the cts?

i think the problem is in the ignition system. i noticed a significant amount of corrosion on the ignition coil plug that is connected to the distributor. so i'm gonna try and fix this problem first before i play with the injectors. i;m thinking that i should look into changing the coil itself but i notice the aftermarket ones look much different than the stock one in my 240. is this installation difficult? where can i get a good coil that is a performance upgrade over the original? i can't seem to find these crane coils that i keep hearing about.
