hey everyone, today i changed my k&n filter with a new one on my 98 s13 blacktop. I cleaned the maf and made sure i had no vacuum leaks.

it definitely runs stronger but it didn't fix my problem. Every now and then i can't shift past 2000 rpms. it's like hitting a rev limiter. I know it sounds like a maf problem but this is intermittent. It will run strong and then after 10 minutes of driving seemingly go into the maf-less safe mode...i have to turn off my engine and turn it back on to get it back to normal. The engine also has a hard time holding idle. Vacuum reads around 20-22 at idle on the gauge indicating no vacuum leak.

I'm thinking my maf is toast or something with the wiring? any help would be appreciated.

sounds like maybe the connection on the MAF is loose or something? Ive had a SR that did the similar thing and the guy had the ground for the sensor on the valve cover that kept getting loose.

Usually when you cant go past 2000 RPM or so thats 90% of the time a MAF related problem

same thing happend to me except it was my TPS. intermittent glitches gave the computer random WOT values and sometimes closed throttle at WOT conditions.

yeah. TPS is on a 0-5v scale. test the pins and see if the voltage smoothly climbs.

as far as the MAF is concerned, either swap with someone else (like me, haha), or test the voltage to the MAF at certain TPS positions.

you have any spare time to maybe swap mafs and see if it's really the maf that's the problem?

theres a writeup here on the forum about wiring electric fans. its by matt4pl

you think it would be safe to drive my s13 around your area by the end of the month? union city cops are infamous for being d!ck to S13 owners.

well i've never been pulled over ever in union city in my s13. and it is primered and pretty much has a straight pipe. as long as you don't speed they won't mess with you...

can't seem to find the writeup...

Yeah, I've had a bad experience in Union City and Fremont before as well...thus I don't go to those areas anymore. ha ha ha.

It does not hurt to check over the maf wiring either. it gets cut and is supposed to be shielded and so on. While you're inspecting your wiring, add another ground to the mafs. Seriously.

I think it's Fremont everyone should be worried about. I have had encounters with UC cops but they have always let me go with just a warning...
