Ya, I know that this is frustrating, 'cause mine was doin' it too. Symptoms were stalling at idle, stalling while downshifting, and really unstable idle. When the car stalled, it would not start for anywhere from 10 seconds to twenty minutes, then - no problem, until the next time it stalled. Was ready to replace fuel pump too, 'cause it reaalllly felt like a fuel prob. However, I took it to a dealer (I had only had the car for a week at that point, so I needed some help). Mech discovered no spark, figured it was a coil power transistor problem. As and aside, the previous owner had chased down the same problem, replaced the power transistor, and had had no problem till just before he sold the car to me. Mech replaced the power transistor - no change. So..."You need a new distributor" - ouch ($715 Cdn). Went ahead and swapped dist, didn't seem to solve problem of stalling, BUT the unstable idle was GONE. I decided to run the car in that configuration for a while to see what happened. Results: hasn't stalled since! The only other thing I did was throw in a couple of cans of injector cleaner. The ECU was reporting a leaky injector before I got the car, haven't had time to check to see if code is still being thrown. Advice; first, the injector cleaner, second;next time the car stalls, check for spark. If none, or you don't know how/have any body to help caused it stalled in a really bad warehouse district, replace the power transistor ($175 Cdn, $120 or so US). If you still have an idle problem, go get yourself a new dist. Not cheap, but it seems to have solved my idle issue, and the bearings on these things do go out. Break a leg. Lemme know how it turns out.
