Hi guys,

I have a 2002 Sentra with the QG18DE. Yesterday morning i was driving to work and my engine just died mid drive. RPMs dropped out of no where. When I tried to restart the engine it would crank under the starter only. I had this happen to me once in my 240sx turned out to be the fuel pump. So I figured i would give it a try. Found one for the same year on craigslist for $40 so I went for it. Went back to my car and put it in. It looked slightly different when I compared the pump and housing i bought and the original one. The hose connections on the "new" one was an inch apart while the original one was right next to each other. tried it out, no good. then tried to listen to the pump again on start. still nothing. My friend pushed the connector on the pump housing in tighter and he said he heard the pump go! happiest 5 mins of my life. till it shut off again. he played with the plug again and started it again and it turned over. so we kept the plug as it was and tightened down the screws. Now it stays on. but it cuts out every 10 mins or so while driving or idle. When It dies i turn the key to off and restart the car it works but it doesnt last... but if the car dies out and i just try to restart without bringing the key back to off it doesnt work. I have a engine maintanance light on but I can't check the codes till i can get it moving reliably. Any Ideas?

Try the manual method of checking codes. It's in the Common Fixes thread in the ToC if I recall.

Still sounds like a fuel pump issue, specifically the electrical connection to the pump. Either rig some way to keep the connector very tight or find a correct pump that fits (check part numbers).

Of course, call your dealer and ensure all recalls were taken care of. I don't think the fuel pump one was for the 02s, but it's worth a shot. Possibly the ECU foam one could apply to you.

Sounds like an obstruction on the fuel line, bring your car to a reputable auto repair shop and ask the mechanic to check the fuel pressure within the fuel system to locate the obstruction, also include in the checking the fuel pump to make sure.
