Has anyone had any success installing an aftermarket door lock actuator (driver's side) for a 1990 300zx?

An actuator is required to enable the key-less entry module for an alarm.

So far, I've tried a standard actuator as well as a DEI 524N High Powered actuator to no avail.

It appears the locking mechanism requires more force than any actuator I have tried can provide.

Does anyone have a fix/solution? Thanks in advance.

I put in a standard run of the mill aftermarket actuator and hooked it up to the cable closer to the door handle, the locking cable of course. Works fine!

Anothing thing to add...

If you are using an aftermarket actuator like I did, you have to strip away a short section of the black plastic and wire sleeve in order for the clamp to bite onto the skinny cable inside. This will move the lock mechanism back and forth which locks and unlocks the door. Also, the only in the door where the actuator will actually mount w/o getting squeezed and interrupted by the door panel is towards the rear, upper corner opening in the door. I wish I took a pic of this when I installed the alarm in my Z 2 yrs ago.

I like how you mounted that actuator. That's more compact than the one I got from Crutchfield.

Cool. @DokkTekk: Thanks for the feedback. :dblthumb:

I tried several ways and this was the only mounting configuration that worked best given the stubbornness of my locking mechanism.

The car is more than 20yrs old and many of the rotating assemblies @ the lock were just old and rusty.

Luckily for me, the 524N had a bit more torque than the standard aftermarket actuator.

Bottom line:

I am hoping this helps someone else who is dealing with the week long pain I experienced, by trying to get it to work properly.

Note, I had to shave (slightly dremel) the door panel to allow the actuator pole-piece to move freely.

No effects to the cosmetic appearance whatsoever. :woot:

Did the same thing on mine. Took me hours to figure out how to make the bulky actuator work. Did a lot of dremelling in the backside of the door panels to allow the rod to move back and forth freely.
