Working on my 2003 3.5L pathfinder to change leaking valve cover gaskets and check and secure power valves screws. Have upper and lower manifold plenums off and everything going well - but noticed that there is significant carbon buildup on the intake manifold and what I believe are the swirl valves. I would insert a pic but can't seem to insert/paste anything?

The car has 230K on it so I'm not surprised but my question is should I try and clean by spraying with carb cleaner or just leave it? Of course whatever gunk comes off would run into the cylinders. Pulling the intake manifold is more than I'm up. I am thinking of just spraying the valve itself and leaving the buildup on the channels/ports. Anyway any help/comments would be greatly appreciated.

Q tips dipped in carb cleaner/gas work great, even if you go throw a box of 100 from the dollar store who cares, could clean up alot without dropping anything into the cylinders

Thanks - I'll give it a try. At 230K , I'm afraid of doing more damage than good. As long as the valves are free to move, I'm not sure how much - if any problem the buildup does other than restrict flow slightly. The upper and lower plenums were actually very clean suprisingly.
