Hello!!!

My 1997 Nissan Maxima GLE has recently got "service engine soon" light popped up.

I checked the codes from Autozone. They are:P0500 - Vehicle Speed sensor.P0600 - AT communication errorP0325 - Knock sensor related

I went to a local Nissan dealer couple of times for this. He told me only one code(speed sensor) Got ripped off with no proper diagnosis. Got speed sensor replaced. Still it is showing the same code. Now he is asking for changing the odometer for the same error code. That rang a bell in my mind: "Was the Speed sensor really faulty at first place?" And all he is telling the things one after another.

When I told the dealer that I got 3 codes instead of one from Autozone. He replied : "Sir, we are authorised and certified Nissan Service center and we have sophisticated equipments from Nissan" Second time I went to same guy he showed me 2 codes. He told me it's a new code from the last time. And everytime diagnosis fees were charged. It's like trial and error method.

All I need is: Someone who can thoroughly diagnose the issues (all at once), and fix the things at reasonable price.

Can you folks guide me as what should I do? (Instead of getting rid of it )

Thx in advance

Welcome to NICO.

There's no need to go to autozone or Nissan to get your codes read, you can do it yourself with a flat head screw driver. Instructions can be found in the second post of the how-to thread at the top of the forum. zerothread/219453There is also a list of what each code means.

Get that odometer replaced.

I had exactly the same set of codes on my 97 GXE and it was the odometer. It wasn't really a lucky guess, the shop I used troubleshot this before replacing the odometer. Something about sending unit in the odometer not communicating with the ECU.

New odometer is not going to fix your knock sensor of course but it will take case of the other two codes. Knock sensor error will not trip the CEL.

Other than that and the starter that quit on me two years ago I've got 220,000 trouble free miles from my Maxima.

I bought an Actron code reader/engine light resetter for $55.00 overthe internet.

I have used it about 3 times and helped a buddy just last week withhis Mazda using it.

I would definitely say it paid for itself.

Too me, its just too hard to read all those flashing dots and dashes
