I saw an add of an 96 Maxima SE 5 speed, on autotrader, for $6500 with 68000 miles. (Car located in Georgia!!!) already talked with the owner and i'm planning to buy it.

(Photos of the car: http://www.cardomain.com/ride/2370441)

I need advice on something: did somebody knows about or tried this car before? is it worth it? what to expect from a car this old? (rust??, running problems?), the owner told me it got some kind of rust on some screws will that be all???.

thanks,Ed

'96 Maxima SE, 5sp, 68k miles in Ga has a KBB private party resale value (Excellent condition) of $5,065. IMO, $6,500 is too high.

Looks like he is trying to get some of his mod money back (assuming the stereo and rims go with it).

I wouldn't think that a car in GA would have much rust (from road salt at least). I would ask for detailed pics of the rust spots, and pics of the upholstery and carpet/floor mats.

For a Maxima/I30 of that age, and with that low mileage, I would pay $6000 at most (in perfect condition; and I would be anal about perfect in this instance). The more imperfections on the interior and exterior, the less I would pay.

Things to think about:

Plus. It's a 5 speed, so that is a bonus if you plan on power adders; and it's just plain faster that the automatic.

Negative. The exhaust that sticks out 6+ inches would be a major turn-off in my eyes. If the rust is on the body/frame/undercarriage, that will cost dearly to fix unless you can DIY.

Those wheels are pretty much made of butter. They're made of a softer alloy than the stock wheels. I'd ask for the stock wheels as well and then sell the AR wheels to get some forged wheels. The exhaust looks silly. IMO, that'd be the first thing to go. I'd offer him 5500 and then work from there and not go above 6000.

Don't think you'd be able to find one for that price. Not with less than 60k on it.

Just for reference, I ran across a 95 (automatic) with 77k miles in KY for $4300 about a month ago.

i just know that price-wise, he's askin way too much. i bought my '99 SE 5spd with 120k for $5,000 with full options, leather, heated seats, power everything, factory BOSE system, remote trunk/locks. guy also had worked at the nissan dealership he bought it from new, so the car was more or less always maintaned there. that was only 4 months ago, so even with the mileage on yours, i would try to talk it down to the lower $5,000's

When I talked with him, he told me that somebody else offerred him $5000 and he said no!!!.I know its a little bit high but i will pay $5500 if the car is very good condition. (I though about $6000, but after all the advice no way jose!!!!!).

i want something low mileage so i can keep it for a while and begin to modified it without problems!!!

thanks,Ed

i wouldn't pay more than the blue book, i just got my 99 max gle for $5000 even with 70k miles and its great condition loaded and brand new paint job right now its worth almost $9000

p.s. its rebuilt so its not a super crazy deal but it was barely hit so no big deal i would look into some body shops cuz you can get a good deal on a car that isnt bad at all

p.p.s. 3 of my last 4 cars have had rebuilt titles, and they've been good rust-wise and mechanically sound

92? toyota previa-sold01 chevy prism-totaled02 hyundai sonata-running greatand now my max-uber sexxy

p.p.p.s. i apologize for wasting your time if you have actually read this almost pointless post.
