This is it; I am in the process of buying the pieces for an upgraded audio system. Now I want to build my own Sub box because I have the ¾” MDF and I’m pretty good at building with wood. But being more or less an audio system noob (I have never owned a sub) I have a few questions.

The Sub I'm planning on buying is a 10" JL W3

1. Usually are the boxes assembled with screws or dado joints and glue?

2. Does carpeting the box add anything other than aesthetic? My upholstering skills are slim to none and would rather just leave it bare wood or paint it.

3. Any particular sealant to be used on the inside?

4. Can anyone point me in the direction of a quality connection block?

The one thing I do know is that the volume of air is key.

If any one has any words of wisdom please pass them along.

Thanks

yes, the volume of air is the key. I have built about 15 or so boxes in my day... I screw it together and use caulk or liquid nails to seal the inside seams.

I would carpet it too... if you leave it bare or just painted, wood chips might dirty up the trunk. Go to oreilly parts store and get the carpet that they sell for under the car (to lay on or use to keep oil off of the floor) and glue it to the box. It's not hard, just takes a little bit of time. I use hot glue, but spray glue might work... just cut it with a new razor blade/exacto/box cutter.

Also, I've tried fiberglass once... don't try it... it's a bear to mess with.

i watched my box being built and when it came to carpeting the guy laid my box on the carpet, pulled it over the front of the box and flipped it then gluing the next side. it basically covered everything but the sides. he then trimmed everything and patched the sides and made the seam invisible.i hope that makes sense. haha
