I just got back to working on my 1991 240 because I got a job and money so thats good. but I have been busy ripping ouit all of the emissions crap that goes into the throttle body and charcol canister. My car did not run well to start so I figured what the hell, I would rip uneeded stuff out to see if there were any vacuum leaks causing the problem. So I took evertyhing associated with what I have mentioned out. My car now runs for a few minutes. It will idle fine but then after like 3 minutes of idling and driving around the house is will shut off and wont start. I have to let it sit for a few hours. I read somewhere that I may need to solder a resistor to the sensor on the thing that has vacuum lines running to the carcoal canister. So I dont really know. Any help would be great. thank you.

couple of things and they are pretty basic but make sure you check them out

Fuel Filter if it is plugging up that would cause this type of issue

Converter same thing, get an exhaust back pressure gauge and make sure the converter is not plugged just my 2 cents

Knock Sensor.

And it will get to the point where it won't crank anymore at all.

When you remove emissions, nothing has to do with it. At all.

Rip it all out, end of story.

Run a hose from the SILVER TUBE that comes OFF THE TOP PART of the exhaust INTO your AIR BOX. You will warm the car up faster.

Other then that, knock sensor man.... If you're getting VERY VERY BAD Mpg, this is it..

Yeah, I am heading out tomorrow to get a fuel filter, then I will go through and probably rip out the exhuasst header back. keep in mind I am restoring it I have never run it on the road. Idk about the knowck sensor. It cranks fine and I am not getting any codes. I just took out the oil pan to get out a piece of the timing chain guide and I got a piggy front for it today!!!

Nevermind about not throwing a code. I put the pan back on after cleaning it out. I didn't find any metal or plastic and the knocking is still there and now I am getting a code. The knocking almost sounds like a piston hitting a spark plug. I am so tired of this damn car.

Well I have been tinkering with my car. I got it running better but the clicking in the head got a whole lot worse. I already took off the timing chain guides so thats not it. My friend mentioned a bent valve which could be associated with it running harsh. After the noise got worse it only does it at deceleration and then it shuts off. It won't idle at all and to start I have to pump the gas rapidly.

If you can... run a compression test to see if you have low compression . If your compression is pretty low than the problem would have to be with the piston rings or valves like your friend mentioned.

Sounds like a plan.
