Undo the crank pulley bolt and pull the pulley off with a gear puller or equivalent tool. soak it in penetrating oil for a few minutes before you go to pull it off for a little lube action.

Your teacher sounds like a hick.

there isnt enough space to put anything behind it .. not even a screwdriver (all the way in)

i heard about drilling and tapping ... and using a puller .. but that is more work then eneded .. but it is much better then the other option about snapping it in half .. i have enough problems finding OEM engine parts

well i found this thread:

zerothread/197316

i am having the same issues ...

ANY OTHER SUGGESTION?WHAT WAS THE END REDULT OF THE ARCHIVED THREAD? (almost a year old)

class is almost out ... i got all the pistons out and the main bearing single unit cap off the engine .. the oil pump is also loose .. but the gear is blocking

and my instructor is wahtever ... he is a chevy guy .. not to mention he is white and with a shaved head ... hick is civilized around these parts

Ahh I misunderstood your first post. I thought you were having troubles with the crank pulley not the timing gear. The timing gear is one of those that you treat like a siezed bolt. Try the penetrating oil soak and hitting it with a hammer to jar it loose. If that doesn't work, bust out the torch to heat things up to break up the corrosion etc. holding the two together. If you eventually get very frustrated, it sounds like the easiest destructive way to get it off is to drill holes in it longitudinally at 180-degrees and use a chisel to bust off the gear.

Hey boss I had the same problem. Good thing for me I work in a machine shop. Bad thing is that I had to cut it off. I tried a torch, soaking it. I even put it on a press and broke the oil pump in half. I found a web site that can actually get the gear stright from Japan. I will see if I can find pull it up and put it on here for you.

Im having the same problem but im just going to try to slide a thin plate of steel behind it with 2 studs welded on each side. Then use a puller to try and pull it off. Ive got every other bolt but that gear off. Glad to see this thing isnt just kicking my a$$. Have you tryed heating it up and melting a birthday candle around the edge of the gear.
