HI, I HAVE A 96 240SX AND THE PROBLEM IS THAT WHEN I CRANK THE PULLEY TO 0 DEGREES AT TDC,PISTON #1 IS NOT ON COMPRESSION STROKE? I VERTIFIED BY TAKING OUT THE SPARK PLUG TO #1 CYLINDER AND PUTTING THE DIPSTICK IN THERE TO SEE WHEN THE CYLINDER REACHES THE HIGHEST POINT AND DROPS, AND IT DOES THAT NO WHERE NEAR ANY OF THE MARKS ON THE CRANK PULLEY. IF ANYONE CAN GIVE SOME ADVICE I'D APPRECIATE IT. THANKS

The piston is most likely on an exaust stroke. Keep turning and check it the next time it comes to the top.

ignore the timing marks then. just do it by using the dipstick down the spark plug gap. the only confusing this is figuring out 1 and 3 but u can tell by the noises comeing out after the exhaust stroke....,so after you hear the exhaust stroke, the next one would be compression and spark. turn again and your on firing.

its a bit confusing i know lol. read through a few times and you will understand. i hope

get back

IM DON'T UNDERSTAND. IF THE MARKS DON'T LINE UP AT TDC WHEN THE PISTON IS AT COMPRESSION STROKE RIGHT BEFORE THE SPARK, THAN HOW WOULD I ACCURATELY ADJUST MY TIMING WITH A TIMING GUN AFTER IF IT WOULDN'T BE ANYWHERE NEAR THE MARKS?

You should have a series of marks. The one painted a differant color is at TDC or 0. The other marks show how far advanced you are from 0.

When you are at TDC on the compression stroke it will be at 0. When you start the car and connect the timing light it will flash when the spark fires which should be BEFORE TDC. On a SOHC it is set to 15 degrees BTDC and on the DOHC I beleve it is 20 degrees BTDC.

Please don't be offended, but if you are haveing a diffacult time understanding this, you need to get a friend that you trust to come over and help you. If you set the timing too far out of wack you can damage your engine. I think once you see how it is set properly it will all be clear.
