Car is arriving shortly, and I need tire recommendations. I am going to go through a new pair of 16 inch tires, before probably upgrading to 18 inch tires/wheels.

I am looking for the best max performance summer tire I can get. ZR rated and and least 95 road holding rating

Tirerack recommends 225/55/16. They only have one ZR rated tire.

Dunlop SP Sport 9000.

Wheel size is 16x7.5

Any recommendations?

When the car was raced, it used 255/50/16, so I am thinking about going with that size. However, tire rack lists no zr rated summer peformance tires in this size.

It basically looks like if I want to order from tirerack the only ZR rated max performance tire, is the dunlop sport.

I guess I need recommendations on the best tire size.

I was thinking 245/45/16.

Found them on tirerack

I guess I shouldnt of just searched for max, but also ultra

245/50ZR16 Firestone Firehawk SZ50 EP Blackwall $137 each

Any idea how these stack up against, the dunlop SP sports? They are slighty cheaper, which is always good.

These look like the best choice. I hope they still have some in a month, or I will have to go with the dunlops

Thanks again!

Where is Maxnix? I know he uses a set of these Firestones..

Hopefully he can provide some seat-of-the-pants handling comments about the tires.

I have 255/50ZR16's.

You MIGHT want my used ones, as I'll be upgrading to 18's in a few weeks.

Falken Ziex's - Love 'em. Search all my posts for "Ziex" for a full writeup.

In the 245 size you get alot of tire choices. The Yoko ES100's are a very good deal, I have them in 17" ZR and they are very nice. I paid 110 for them in 245/45 17 so I'm sure they cheaper in 16". NOt as sticky as my Potenza SO3's but overall very very nice.

245 or 255/50! Don't take Tire Racks size advice here, those 225's will wear out very fast, as they can't carry the load.

I have used the Firestones and recommend them highly for traction. But for ride, and great balance it's Michelin only . When I switched from the SZ50's to 255/50 Pilot XGT's, I got most of the performance, with a dramatic ride improvement.

Hands down, without a doubt, the Firestone SZ50 EP in 255/50x16 unless you want to blow big bucks for the top Michelin Sport Pilots. Read szhosain's comment's.

Yes, indeed! The Firestone Firehawk SZ50EP is the best tire I have ever used in over 28 years (Edit: 30 years - I am getting old! :( ) of driving! (I have not [yet] tried the Pilot Sport or Pilot Sport AS, and it may be as good or better from reports.)

I have raved enthusiastically about the SZ50EP many times in many posts! :D Please do a search and see my earlier comments on it. The only caveat that I have heard is to not use it in snow conditions.

Greg's Falken Ziex 512 is also a good recommendation, but having compared the two directly (both on my Q45, but in different sizes), I would go with the SZ50EP first, even though it is more expensive. The SZ50EP is grippier in wet and quieter - the balance "lasted" more miles as well.

For my M45, I really regret that it is not available in the correct size (245/45-18), so I will try out the Pilot Sport or Pilot Sport AS sometime early next year.

In a few months, I will change tires on my wife's Acura 2.2CL (if we do not trade it in for a G35 :D ), and I plan to get the SZ50EP in a 205/55-16 size for it. Basically, I want the best wet weather performance I can get, for when she and my son are out in rain.

Unfortunately, I have a disagreement here. IMO, the Pilog XGT V4 is downright dangerous in wet weather - I would never recommend it to anybody, I am afraid - it is what I call a "white knuckle" experience on damp highways.

The Pilot XGT H4 is not as bad, according to Dennis (Q45Tech), but I do not have any experience with it. I intend to try the Pilot Sport or Pilot Sport AS for my next tire for my M45, since the SZ50EP is not available in the correct size for it ... sigh!

i have gone 70,000 miles on pilot v4 225-60-15,between 2 sets back to back, great tire, not bad in wet, imo.currently have 10,000 miles on 235-60-15 pilot h4,cant tell any difference between the 2 sizes or speed ratings.tires need very little weight to balance up and ride ok for a performance tire.

FWIW, I am not the only one with terrible wet weather experience with the Pilot XGT. Here is an old post from "Highway Q45".

Quote »Ditto on Z's Michelin comments.
" I have found the Pilot XGT's to be terrible in wet weather and will no longer buy them for that reason. The last set I had was because I had no choice - my older tire gave way, and the local dealer only had the XGT as an option. Dry braking and handling is excellent though!"
My wife swapped ends twice in the rain this year with the same tires; they only had 10K on them. They are truly scary in the rain. I changed over to 16's with 245-50's Kumho 712's (97 load rating). Once correctly balanced the Kumhos proved to be glass smooth, a bit noisier, firmer, but the wet/dry grip and handling is light years ahead of the old 15's with Michelins. There are better tires than the Kumho's but the price was right. Anyone interested my old lightweight forged HICAS wheels w/ or w/o the old tires let me know.

couldn't agree more with the firestone sz50's, very, very good tire!!! never used them on my Q, but had them on my subaru svx, and they were awesome. i'm currently running the yoko es100's on my Q, so far very good performance. great in the wet, the grip is super, a little noisy but not horrible. can't go wrong with these if the budget is tight.jeff

I really like my Yoko AVS dBs 245/50zr16... on a 16x7.5 rim.

Plenty of load rating- I would NOT go any narrower

I think 255 is too wide- check the mfg recommended rims. The 245/50 is within tenths of the original diameter.
