Need Gauge CLuster Help!! BADLY!!

Ok, I have a non-functional HUD. I picked up a 1992 analog USDM cluster and a JDM analog both w/ harnesses. I have a 1991. When I plug both hernesses and their respective cluster into the main dash harness and try to get it all to work, the only things tha work on the cluster are the turn signals and the fuel gauge whcih just points stright up (dosen't work properly) I have heard that 1991 cars need 1991 clusters. Is this true? How can I get this to work!!??
