Must be cheap, reliable.

Will be used to transition data from old lappy to new one, old PC to new one, and subsequent automated monthly disaster recovery backups.

Thinking I'd order online - Newegg? ebay? What brand should I get?

I use this: http://www.cooldrives.com/port....htmlwith a 300GB Hard Drive. I use it in my car and wherever I go. The thing plays avi's, dvd rips, mp3's, streams music over FM, and stores data(duh) :DThe company also provides firmware upgrades.

You can get a 500GB Hard Drive from Fry's for around $100.00

One caveat: It's made in Korea, so build quality is not that great, but mine has been treating me good for a year and a half.

This one looks even better. Same company.http://www.sarotech.com/englis...no=19

But it's soooo fun to use! Haha

Anyway, I'd just go by the reviews on newegg.com as to which hdd enclosure to buy. Those computer nerds know their stuff. I usually look for the most reviews on a product and make a decision based on what they have to say.

Good info. I'm thinking maybe 80GB?

Not so interested in the online, prefer in-house.

If you have a USB 2.0 jack on your laptop, then almost anything from Seagate or Western Digital is likely to do you just fine - just get the ones with USB 2.0 only (and do not also have Firewire - that costs a teeny bit extra). Cheapest models are usually at Newegg.com or Buy.com ...

If you want to do backups later on a regular basis, you need more than 80GB. Something like a 250GB is still relatively inexpensive. In fact, these may even be cheaper (well, similar in cost) than the current range of 80GB externals (which are smaller 5400 rpm drives and designed for portability). Certainly more cost efficient per megabyte for the larger drives!

Make sure to get something that is 7200rpm, and has an 8MByte (minimum) or 16MByte (preferred) buffer.

Greg. Heres the thing, you are going to want to get a USB 2.0 card if you don;t have any USB 2.0 slots. Also, I just went through this process myself to get an external drive. Get a Western Digital MyBook Essential , $89 for 250gb on Buy.com . Great drive, On and off button and is stylish and carries the reliaibility of Western Digital. Don't get a knock off brand when you want to protect your backup information. Anyway, WHATEVER you do no matter what anyone tells you, make sure you get a drive with an external power supply that plugs into the wall. The ones that run off the USB power are garbage, they may be tiny, but they are slow and sometimes the USB port can't power them.
