I replaced my '91 240SX's shocks/struts and I replaced the worn out bushings in the tension control rods with the hard eurothane performance type. I also replaced the tie rod ends. I got an alignment today. The car was pulling hard to the left, but it rolls straight now. The steering wheel was shaking bad at about 50+ mph. Now it shakes, not bad, but more than it should at about 70+ mph. I'm thinking either the wheels need balancing (but I just had them balanced not too long ago) or else something else in the front suspension is worn out. The steering is responsive, but seems a little loose on center (understand?). I'm super cheap, but I want to fix this. Other than getting ANOTHER balance, what else can I do for free (DIY)? What else should I check? I imagine the alignment guy just set everything at factory specs. Should I try increasing toe-in by 1 turn of the tie-rod end? Could the stiff eurothane bushings be messing up the caster?

I'd take a look at the rack bushings.

Well first off your tires might have flat spots. No matter how you balance them they will shake the car. Rotate them back to the rear for a while. Second replace your ps fluid and make sure there is automatic trans fluid in there and not ps fluid. I know it is confusing but it is factual. Worn out fluid can cause a shimmy at highway speeds. You are going to feel more vibrations with the urethane, nothing you can do about it.

Thanks! How do I remove the PS fluid? I imagine it is original! Any certain type of ATF I should use? I knew the performance bushings would give me a harder "feel" through the steering wheel, but they wouldn't make the steering wheel shimmy back and forth would they? I'll move the front tires back to the rear tomorrow. Should I mess with the toe-in? On my old Ford truck, there was a screw you could tighten on the steering "box" that would cause the worn gears to mesh tighter. Does the '91 240SX have something like that?

thanks!Jim

I guess that dexron/mercon stuff. Remove one of the hoses with the car off. and put a container under the resivior. Put the end of the hose in the container too. Have some one turn the wheel a few times until you get most of it out. then turn the crank a few times by hand and repeat. Reattach hose, refil resivior and turn wheel until the level goes down and refill. turn crank by hand a few times and repeat until it is full and doesn't go down any more. there might be a better way of doing this but this is the way i did mine.

Don't mess with your alignment or tweak anything. Leave it to the professionals or you will regret it.
