the ip is not the problem. Try to ping back and forth between the two computers.

Cool. so they can see eachother, and you said the file sharing network is working.. Soo.. I'd say start by running the connection sharing wizard on the client computer.

ah ha, i love the wizards.on the client computer (i'm sorry i dont have XP menus memorized, so were gonna have to work together). You need to get toooo.. a network component list.. ITs the list of installed clients, adapters, protocols and servicesknow what i'm talkign about?

Ok, so at one time, you have your desktop and laptop hooked up with a crossover cable. the network works and you share internet right? then you upgrade which os on which system? is that all you changed? no hardware or cables or anything else? Let me know if I have this right.

I'm no network expert, but I am good at troubleshooting.

Are you only having trouble sharing just the internet connection? under *my network places* in the start menu, can you see both computers there?

The user name and password for this connection were not saved for use by all users. As a result, intternet connection sharing can only dial this connection when you are logged on, to enable automatic dialing, save your username and password for all users in the connect dialog.

How do i save my un and pw fpr all users in the connect dialog?

Yeah, XP's multiple user feature is kinda screwey. On your desktop PC which you just upgraded, do you have any other user accounts set up besides the main one? Is your desktop the machine you are dialing from to share the connection?

heres my input:windows xp has a built in firewall, so you have to make sure that it is turned off. it is under start-control panel-network and internet connections-network connections-right click on local area connection-properties-advanced-make sure that internet connection firewall is not checked

also:check your tcp/ip properties and make sure that you have obtain ip address and obtain dns server automatically

as far as the user name and password not being set, just curious if by chance you are getting a error 678 on the computer when trying to connect, um my email address is [email protected] if you need more help

oh and about changing the ip address:go to start-run-type in command to get to the command promt, then type in

ipconfig ( gets your ip address, subnet mask, and default gateway )ipconfig /release (releases ip)ipconfig /renew (renews your ip)

hope this helps

I gotta go to bed. I hope you get it working. I think the key is somewhere in getting one main user account set up, not the admin and guest. (even tho that's supposed to be a safer setup for anti-hacker) also, if you are trying to connect from the guest, that would be the problem cuz it has limited privelages.good night and good luck.

Check the local security policy and make sure it allows remote network connections. That's probably the problem. XP is pretty simple to use. I work out here at NASA Dryden as a desktop/network tech. It would be nice to make sure they ping also.
