Here is the dillema. I am in the process of tearing down my RB20DET. I wasn't planning on replacing the oil pump, but I was going to replace the oil pump gasket and the front crank seal. I haven't been able to remove the crank timing gear. I have used tons of PB Blaster and tons of heat to no avail. I haven't seen a puller that I could get around the gear due to the oil pump housing. I used a torch for what was probably way too long. I am able to get screwdrivers under the gear, but I am getting nowhere. In all of you guys' opinions, do you think I would be okay to just forget about and move on with the build? I think so, but what do I know?

Just crack the gear off with a chisel... RB20's seem to be notorious for having rusted on crank gears....

i would do that, but I don't have a line on a new gear. I'm waiting on a reply from Nismoparts right now

i'm not saying that this is good advice but, i just went through this problem over the weekend on my rb26. tried a torch and tapping it to crack it loose, nothing worked. supposedly there is a special tool just for getting this thing off the crank, but i didn't want to wait so we used a small screw driver and various chisels to carefully wedge it off. this is certainly not the best way to do it, if you have some time try to find that tool from a MAC guy or maybe the parts guy at a Nissan dealership. best of luck!

well, i appreciate all of the advice, I'm just wondering if it would be safe to just run the engine without replacing the front oil seal, even after i've beaten the hell out of the gear and heated it up.

Drill a hole down the gear from front to back.Make sure not to touch crank.Couple of wackw with a cold chisel and you should be good.If not, do the same on the other side also.

i ended up getting mine from japanparts:

part 13021 SPROCKET CRANKSHAFT

i don't know if the gears are the same for rb20/25/26, but if you send them an email detailing what you want they will get it for you within the week.

parts number... the RB26 is different. But the RB20 and RB25 are the same. Someone needs to freakin order a bunch of these from japan and slang them on the forums... I would do it but I don't know anyone in japan

Sorry to bring back a dead thread but I thought I'd confirm that that crank timing gear for the RB26 is the exact same as the RB20.

I just had the same problem with the crank timing gear being siezed onto the crankof my RB20. Drillled and cracked it off and replaced with gear from a 26. Gear size and tooth count are the same. Timing mark is in the exact same spot.

Part # may be different but they are physically the same part. Which would make sense considering that the 20,25,and 26 all use the same timing belt and can all use the same cam timing gears. Hope that info helps someone in the future.

Just split the old gear and buy a new one. It will be cheaper and faster than trying to get i off with a puller.

no offense but i find it hard to believe that the correct way is to "split a gear and chisel it away from the crank"

i would like to remove it the correct way..
