i am considering doing some of the prep work with my s13 under the advice of my local bodyshop. they told me the labor alone would cost a fortune (plus i definately have to replace an entire rear quarter panel!!$$$). doing some of the prep work would save money obviously. since i have a compressor the guy at the shop told me i could buy a rotary sander and use some 100 -180 grit sandpaper sheets. he also suggested i take off the spoiler and trunk and use chem stripper on it. the inner door panels would have to come off and door handles disassembled and sanded (by hand). i'd like to have as many parts of this car stripped to the bare metal if possible. bumpers, lights, everything removed by hand (so they don't have to). he said the labor is tedious and frustrating. i would like some advice from people who know how to prep and paint in order to make the job a little easier. thanks.

I'm not a body work expert, but I dont think you'd want to take the whole car down to bare metal. Rust sets in fairly quickly in the humid north east, not enough rust to rot anything out, but enough to mess up any paint laid over it.

Feel free to tell me I dont know what the f*** I'm talking about :)

its not necessary to sand the car down to bare metal unless there is rust showing through. its hard to say how far your gonna have to sand it without seeing it in person. if the paint is peeling and whatnot take it down with 180 and prime the area and then sand with 400. you may not even have to sand with 180 if you dont have to. just take the clear down to the color coat with 400. and yeah take off both bumpers, the door handles, spoliers, lights etc. and also you can clean it really ****ing good everywhere with water and a rag. thats about it.

ok the thought of spending thousands on this body is getting to me...the best estimate i've gotten so far is $4,500 to change the color and weld on a new rear quarter panel. this is to get the car looking awesome. what do you guys think?
