im planning on installing a sub into my car. ive already got the sub, its an eclipse sw4000 series. its rated at 200W with a peak of 600W. if i was to get an amp that has a max output of like 800W and a constant of 400W. would there be any problem with that?? or would that eventually blow the sub?

You should be fine. Low power kills subs, not a little over RMS.

so then, on the flip side, if i was to use an amp that only puts out a max of 200W that would be bad for my sub?? with a constant 200W and max of 600W??

Depends what amp you're looking to get. as long as your gains aren't cranked all the way you shouldn't have too many problems. with the amp you're looking to get. What brand amp is it?

Here is something to think about. If your sub has dual 4ohm VC's, then getting a monoblock amp will be fine. If it is a single 4ohm VC, then get a regular 2 channel amp. Reason being, you can wire the 2 VC's in parallel to get a 2 ohm load. Feed that to a single channel amp and you're in business. If you only have 1, 4ohm VC, get a 2 channel amp, bridge it and now each channel is at 2 ohms.

The reason you want to give the amp a 2 ohm load is because you will, theoretically, double your output. More bang for your buck! If you bridge an amp to a 2 ohm load, each channel will operate at 1ohm. That is ok if your amp is 1ohm stable, but if it's not, you will burn it up.

looneybomber has a great point if it's a dvc a mono amp would be best but if it's a svc sub a 2 channel amp would probably be the best choice for you.

Or a "mono-block" amp...don't skimp on the power, especially if you're going to buy online. Just be careful of deals too good to be true.

To get great bass you'll need to put that sub in the correct size box. The box is the most important part, the amp is 2nd most important.

Here's something good to know...A ported box will give you an extra 3db's of bass over a sealed box. To think of it another way, if you sent 200w to that sub in a ported enclosure, to hit the same SPL in a sealed box, you would have to DOUBLE the output power to 400w.

i see.... that kinda throws off my plans just a bit, i was thinking about intergrating the sub into my back seat of my '95 infiniti j30. which side would the port be better on, the part that goes into the car, or the part that goes in the trunk??

That opens up a whole new topic entirely. Are you going to mount the sub(s) in a box, or are you going with an infinite baffle (no box, using the trunk as the enclosure so long as you seal off the trunk from the cabin.)

If you're going ported, you're biggest concern is getting it to fit in the box because they can be quite long sometimes. Next thing is you do not want the port opening inside the box to be close to the speaker, you need it quite a few inches away if possible.

For that sb it requires a 2 cubic foot box ported. I just installed a SW4000 in a smaller suv, yesterday running off the bridged rear channel of an Alpine 4-channel amp in a sealed box of .75 cubic feet, and it sound good for the small amount of power it was receiving.
