Someone is selling a '90 Q45 and it has 196K on it. I am not sure if the timing chain guide has been replaced yet; it was a repo before the current owner had it (he has had it a year and put 30K on it). Also he did the radiator and replaced all the rubber in the engine. Can I expect it to continue running a while? Also he say it gets 20 mpg. Is this typical?

Also, has anyone tried converting a Q45 to CNG?

If the chain guides arent done, expect it to fail at any random point in time.

CNG?

clean natural gas.

How tough are the guides to do?

Also, my real question is how long the engine should last on average (specifically in regards to mileage).

Clean Natural Gas? Uhh. I don't think so.

As far as the high mileage, there are quite a few of us that have well over 200k on our Q's. Best thing is to find out about the chain guides first, then consider changing out both Knock sensors, O2's and clean your EGR system, fuel rail etc and the car will run like a different car. Next the suspension and drive train should be looked at.

To get the high mileage you will have to replace aging parts so be willing to do so.

Don't know how compressed natural gas would work in a fuel system designed for liquid gasoline. Cost would be enormous.

The engine wont die. I mean, it could, but thats highly unlikely. There's Qs out there pushing 300 and 400k. The key is maintenance without neglect.

High miles are very possible, but I wuld also say it's very possible, the pervious owner wasn't spending the past due payments (repo) on oil changes and maintenance .

buying a 200,000 mile q without complete maintenance records, especially a reposessed one with multiple owners is plain insanity.

Even for free, it probably needs $10K in repairs. The right Q for $6K may need little or no repair.

Poorman, no I am not. I do not usually post unless I feel I can offer real world help. I actually learn things from these forums also.
