Ok i feel dumb, I pulled the engine out my car today and didn't realize that the engine won't go on the stand until I take off the clutch. The problem is I dont have a clutch alignment tool, and nowhere in town seems to have one so I have to order it which takes 5 bussiness days and the engine is sitting on a hoist that I am renting for like $20 a day. Is the alignement tool vital to proper removal or is it more important for install? Can I use some thing else? Other wise I might just put the engine back in and bring the hoist back and wait for the tool to arrive.

its more for installing and if you have a big enough marlin spike that might work anyways.

I got the clutch off and the engine on the stand, thanks. I will start pulling apart the engine today. I will keep everyone posted.

I'm pulling the engine out of my 240 today, When you pull the engine do you have to remove the transmission first? I was told i needed to but I'v never had to working on old V8's (This is the first car I'v worked on that's not at lest 40 years old.) Has anyone done it this way? Any advice?

streetspirit7, don't pull the transmission if you're pulling the motor. It's easier to pull em both at the same time and to put them back together.

Would it not be easier to just leave the transmission in the car compleatly and bolt it back up from underneath when I put the engine back in?

That is not possible. When I pulled my engine I removed the transmission first and then the engine. When I put it back in I put them in together at the same time. If your going to do it with them together you really need a leveler on the hoist, it will make it MUCH easier.

yeah even with just pulling it out i can see how much easier it is to realign the transmission. i wouldnt want to be messing around with the hoist lining up bolts and dowel pins while under the car all grimy claustrophobic and $hit. at least with the driveshaft youve only got one problem to deal with.

how the hell did this post reappear anyway?
