Can anyone give me a simple walk though on replacing/cleaning the EGR valve on a 1996 I30?

Are there any special tools needed or things to be aware of while trying to do this. My local AutoZone has the EGR valve for almost 1/3 the price the mechanics want to replace it.

If this is something that a shade tree mechanic can do, I would like to try and save the money and do it myself.

Thanks in advance.

The reason it cost so much to have done is because it is on the exhaust manifold closest to the fire wall, and a pain in the rear to change.

Hey Travis:

I went to dealer today and they told me the reason my check engine soon light was on was my EGR valve needed cleaning. Did you ever get the details on how to remove and clean the valve.

email if you can.

Chances are the egr tube from the intake manifold to egr valve is clogged along with the opening in the intake manifold. If your car has ABS it will make it more difficult to do. You do not have to remove the egr valve. The worst part is loosening the tube from the egr valve to exhaust manifold. you have the back the nut off and slightly bend the tube down to get the 12mm nut hold the upper tube.
