Car: installing stereo systems and minor performance upgrades

Post

The last few weeks i've had a fairly loud ticking sound, coming from the intake side of the valve cover around cylinders 2 and 3. Its a steady ticking that changes as i pull the throttle cable. I had a friend say it could be the lifters on the intake valves. One thing I've noticed along with the ticking was that instead of a steady exhaust, its got that unsteady v8 gurgle while its idling, its not too bad but you can definatly notice the uneven tone. I need to know a possible solution as soon as possible and if the part(s) thats ticking could cause problems, don't feel like having my car break down or blowing the engine. So if anyone can get back to me at what the problem might be it would and what parts i'd have to replace it would be a great help. Btw the car's a 95 240sx .

it may be the injectors, all injectors tick when they are closing, some are louder then others

the gurgle *may* be an exhaust leak, or it may be rich and strugling to run

would that be a sign that the injector(s) could be going out? its a metal on metal ticking sort of sound if that helps with a diagnosis at all

If you want to test the injectors, just unplug them while its running and see if the sound goes away or not.

I'd say if it's loud ticking and it's coming from the middle of the valve cover you probably have some bad wear on the valve train..

But I'd also wonder if you have a cylinder not firing. Check each cylinder while running one at a time. Disconnect the injectors and see if the motor runs worse or stays the same. V8 gurgling sounds like its not firing on at least one cylinder to me. Could be the source of the sound too.. but not likely.

The Gurgling sound isn't really too noticable just the exhaust note sounds alittle uneven compared to its old steady hum. I'm pretty sure all cylinders are firing cause i had my fourth plug jump out of its socket one day(was crossthreaded) and i know how the loss of power felt. I really think its something to do with the valve train, when i get home i'll unplug the injectors first and see if that fixes anything, and i'll post back on here. Also with the wear and tear on the valve train are there any certain parts or areas i should be looking for that will be worn down..... Also when i pull the valve cover to check around the head all i need is a new inner and outer gasket when i put it back on correct? no new bolts or anything....

nope just the gaskets, and dont unplug the injectors for too long, the best thing to do would be to use a mechanics stethiscope to listen to them

how long is too long with unplugging them, like 30 seconds 5 seconds a minute???? i don't want to acciedently screw the car up while trying to diagnose the problems
