I like to do some gaming at home and the PII 400mhz aint cuttin it anymore. Have any of you ever looked at http://www.cyberpowersystem.com ?? Looks like you can build a sweet machine for around $500..well at least I can. I already got a nvidia Gforce 4 4200ti 64MB card that I'll transfer into the new machine a long with a good CD-RW. Already got the monitor keyboard and mouse. I'm planning on going the AMD Athlon XP route. Cyber Powerstyems off a cool 3 year warranty and a nice selection of sweet boxes.

Any opinions?

I say go for it man! These "let us build it for you" companies are great, and they are all so competitive! The prices and quality are awesome, so I say if the company checks out, do it up!

I did it with a different no name company that used brand name parts, and my CPU is holding up amazing. Also, I get a smooth 60 FPS in Counter Strike at all times :)

Just don't buy one from Staples/Business Depot/Wal-mart/Wherever sells pre-fab computers.

They're ****! I used to work at staples for 2 years as a computer tech. I've seen all the problems, trust me.

HP's are worse than Compaq's, and Sony's are the best.

I recommend going the AMD Athlon XP route, with a nice video card and atleast 256mb of DDR (or 384+ of SD) ram. Good luck, it should be easy to find a good setup!

Okay guys, here's the deal on these machines. I currently work for one of the above-mentioned electronics stores. (won't say which till i quit :)) I know that these computers really, really suck BUT your computer from Cyberpower could suck too IF you don't get the proper components.

For example, if you get a kick-a$$ system with a so-so motherboard, you're gonna run into a ton of problems. If you are going the Athlon XP route which i HIGHLY recommend (AMD's rock), then get the Giga-byte 7VAXP motherboard. It is amazing. A couple more pieces of advice. Do not get the XP 2200+ processor as AMD has some serious heating issues with it and has since it came out. Also, do not get DDR400 RAM (PC3200). No motherboard on the market today is stable enough to handle this RAM well and I am seeing a ton of problems with fried motherboards, etc.

P.S. If anyone needs any advice as to what to put in their system or where to get things or anything else computer related, I'd be glad to help.

Lemme know what you decide and btw, the Ti4200 card rules. But i'm getting the 128MB one :)

Nick :)

Computer's are alot like car's.Everyone is going to tell you which ones suck, and which ones are good.Unfortunately, if you use it for just basic things, all computer's are the same. Yep, you heard me. Those people that say IBM or HP sucks really don't have anything to base that on. Sure, your friends may have broken, but what was he using it for?All I'm saying, is unless you show some recalls or consumer reports, your opinions are just that. Opinions.

Ford, CHevy, and Kia have bad names due to all their recalls, so their reputation is understandable. But EVERY computer has issues, and no one can dispute that. Whether you go with 1 motherboard or the next, chances are you won't even know the difference anyways.

Thanks guys. I usually would just build my own PC in the past, but this was actually cheaper to do. I just needed to know if they had a good build quality. That and with the AMD Athlon XP cpu/motherboard/memory combo's I am unfamiliar with. I didn't keep up with the scene for one friggin year and it's over my head now. I went ahead and purchased a system. I figured if I'm having someone put together quality parts it ought to be good. Plus that 3 year warranty is pretty sweet. I never would go with a system from Circuit City, Best Buy or those likes as they are WAY overpriced for what they are. Here's what I got:

-AMD Athlon XP 2100+ plus heatsink(could have got better but the price was a factor and anything is better then the PII 400 at this point)-MSI KT4-VL VIA KT-400 8X AGP MAIN BOARD W/ AUDIO & USB 2.0 (cyber power recommended it for the quadspeed memory 400mhz DDR) Plus it has the two front USB adapters SWEET. I typically prefer ABIT.-256 MB PC3200 400MHz DDR (I doubt more is necessary)-MAXTOR 40GB 7200 RPM ATA 133 (adding another 20G I have at home)-DVD Rom (adding CD-RW I already have at home)-nVidia GEFORCE-4 MX440 64MB 4X AGP w/ TV-OUT (I'll swap this out with the ti4200 I have at home)-AC97 3D Wave SOUND (swapping with Sound Blaster Audigy gamer)-Of course it comes with standard 56K modem, 10/100 NIC, and mouse and keyboard that match the casing which has the rice neon lights and all that jaz.

Ninjak,

After working for HP for two years and Gateway for one as well as doing computer repair for over 8 years, I would have to say that I personally feel that these machines are unreliable. I don't care if you're typing a paper or playing an MMORPG, if the computer has heating issues/bad motherboard/underpowered system, it's going to screw up eventually. Why do you think that they only come with a standard one-year warranty and anything else costs extra? Trust me, I can't tell you everything I know, but you don't want these machines.

As far as these custom-built models, I stand by my previous statement. Chris, I would VERY VERY STRONGLY recommend you try to get your order changed to PC2700 RAM. You are going to have a ton of stability issues. As I said before, no motherboard can handle DDR 400 yet.

Thanks Nick. I'll keep the order as is, but if necessary I'll take full advantage of that warranty as soon as it begins to f*k up. I will challenge the machine with multi-player LAN wars and resource gobling programs that my GF uses for work. So if we don'g make it screw up it never will. I'll keep a good look out with your advice. Thanks guys!

My friend bought a Cyber power computer, he hated it. It sucks, it ****s up all the time, he wishes he'd just built his own like me. : )

What did he put in it? Or what was he doing? I've built PC's before and it's not like it messed up because a bolt was under torqued or something when putting it together. It would have something to do with what hacked *** software you got installed. I've done it before and had to flush the whole OS down the drain and start from scratch...but there's a thousand possibilities. Like I said, if it messes up..WARRANTY baby!

I mean really, they are quality company's parts, assembled and sent to you at a cheaper price than I have ever seen. If you get a cheapo motherboard or something ya its going to screw up but is that their fault that you picked it? 3 year warranty? wow I think as soon as get my money back from my parents, the stuff not in the cd, I'm going to get one. WHat OS are you installing?

Hey Q45Blue, how is the computer repair business? How would I get a job at best buy as computer repair (prerequisite requiered?)? Training required? Could you sent me an email at [email protected] . thanks

I was wondering that too. By the way, I DID get my new computer (self-built): Athlon XP 2400+, 512 PC2700 DDR, Giga-byte motherboard (GA-7VXP), Chaintech GeForce 4 Ti4200 128MB DDR AGP 8x video card (yes it's very nice :)), and a Lite-On 52x burner. All told I paid about 730-750 for it.
