my car has been idling really high ever since i swapped in the new motor, it runs great, except for the fact that it idles aat about 1500k cold and then goes down to about 1100k after warmed up. that's still really high of an idle, plus the fact that it backfires alot and sometimes it would make such a loud pop that it seems would be damaging to the engine. i've decided to try and fix it, and after researching ive narrowed it down to bad timing and possibly the tps. now the tps has never been removed, but i decided to test it anyways.

it's weird, because according to the instructions, it would be about 2.0 ohms released and 10 ohms when depressed. now, by released im assuming that means when the throttle is fully closed, and fully depressed means when it is at WOT (wide open throttle). if im correct, then my tps is giving a backwards for some reason. im getting about 2.8 when the throttle is closed and about 8.5 when it's open, which is comepletely backwards. i dont think adjusting the tps would fix this problem. would anyone know whats wrong with this picture?

also, when i check the voltage of the tps, which, according to the FSM, should be .4 volts closed and 4.0 open? well, mine gives off about 4.5 volts when closed and goes down to about 1.2 when i open it. again, completely backwards. im i doing something wrong? im measuring ohms and the 20k ohms setting and voltage at the 100 setting, and im pretty sure the negative and positive terminals are correct. besides, would a wrong neg and pos terminal cause that?

hopefully someone could have an answer to this. ive ben pulling my hair out for the past couple of days trying to figure this out. and trust me, ive searched. any help would be great. thanks!

that sounds crazy

sounds like a few wires are bass ackwards. In my 90 I am at .5 volts closed and 5.00 wot dont know about the ohms. If its running backwards then when you are at wot your LEAN AS HELL. that is why your backfiring and may have hurt your car already FIX THIS NOW!

no dice.

these tps sensors, if measured on the wrong two prongs will give backwords resistance readings.

but, i cant remember the spec, even though i just checked mine, but i do believe you're right about 2-10k. so, youre just on the wrong two prongs, but if you only go from 2.8 to 8.somethingk, you have a problem.

i think you should try a new one if that is the case.

especially if youre having voltage issues.

no im not having any issues regarding electrical if that's that what u mean. the car just runs kind of weird. actually, just this morning i had my gf's dad thats a mechanic help me fix the problem. after resetting the timing it was still running pretty bad, so he moved the tps all the way down from where it was (he didnt use a multimeter or anything, just turned it til it ran better). but after he did that i took it out for a test drive and it drove super smooth, idling at 800 and everything. it's still misfiring but im sure that it's due to a bad 02 sensor that's burning too much gas that i left it unplugged. i guess my tps really was set at the wrong position, since moving it really did do the trick. im just still a little mystified as to why it was giving me the backwards specs. im thinking about giving it another shot and adjusting it to proper voltage and resistance specs. i guess it was because i was measuring the wrong prongs. ill give it another try. thanks everyone!

and just buy that o2 sensor. get the universal one, its too cheap.
