94 Q45

I need to know every tool (size, extension, etc) involved in replacing the valve cover gaskets. I won't have a spare car to run me to the parts store to get a wrench, so I would like to have everthing on hand before I attempt it. My tool supply is low and your feedback will be my shopping list...so please be very thorough.

I already have purchased the 2 gaskets, RTV for the half moons, and new spark plugs.

Thanks guys!!

If memory serves correct, hers what you need.....

10mm socket, wrenchProbably need a flex head or soemthign to get the bottom bolt on the pass side.....

I think you need an 8mm to get the coil packs

various allen wrenches

5/8 spark plug socket

Put it this way..... I have a 96 piece set I got from sears (craftsman ONLY) and I had everything I need, except maybe a flex head......

Also, now would be a good time to remove TB....... Especially helpful on the drivers side.... youll also need to remove the EGR tube......

you can call me if you like... 765-621-8336

Kind of hard to pull that much detail. I have probably over 20 extensions of different lengths and diameters. Just pull the one that looks about right out of the toolbox. #8 spark plug will be difficult, try maybe a 4 or 6" extension there. You'll need a 8mm jointed socket for the coils. 10mm jointed sockets make life easier on all the valve cover bolts and other things, along with a long 1/4" extension (18" long? 24"?). Extendable mirror is nice. Good light is a must. Dental picks are good for removing the metal clips on the harness connectors, and various screwdrivers too. You'll need something to clean up the covers, though solid gaskets probably won't leave too much behind. Pliers for the spring hose clamps, plus whatever tool is needed for the other clamps in the way.I'm sure there are other things unfortunately.

Didn't see you list the O-rings in the centers of the valve covers as parts on hand.

Thanks...I may take you up on that!!

The search function isn't working for me, but I remember a thread with "gorilla bending" one of the pipes and it was pretty detailed.

We should start having DIY stickies with step-by-step processes for tasks every Q owner will have to do in the life of their car....ie fuel pump, valve cover, ABS brake job, even making the AIR bag light going off after disconnecting the battery.

Ah, that's right. Forgot about the TB. 6mm allen socket for that, plus you'll need a gasket for it and for the EGR valve.

Be very careful with the hoses going to the valve covers. Mine were too brittle and would not bend enough to pull the end fittings out of the valve covers. Darn things shattered. Doesn't seem to be a common problem, but be aware. If you break the hoses in the far back you're down for removing the plenum to replace them.

The gaskets make a 'full circle' and then trail down the middle with an 'o-ring gasket' spaced every 3 inches or so. I think this is what you are talking about.

You'll see the pipe in the way on the driver's side. Use a 3/8" exension to get enough leverage to bend it up. Be careful with the plenum casting.

retarted I am not that much of a fan of jointed things, i always have issues with them, trying to make them work always takes me longer than just cutting your hands up on other metal pieces...

But to each their own..... BTW CPQ if you call me, Im good all day tomorrow (no school... w00t!)

I would **highly** recommend doing the drivers side cover with the TB off..... if you intend on doing al this stuff, in one day, I would recommend starting VERY early......

I think the factory NGKs have torque instructions on the box. Go hand tight and then another 2/3 turn I think to get a good seal with the crush washer. If not then probably 12 ft-lbs would do. Use compressed air to blow out the plug wells before removing the old plugs--very important step. I have a Craftsman torque wrench that goes form 5-80 ft-lbs which I like a lot. Easy to set, and the 5 ft-lb low is good for the smaller bolts.

If you don't have the FSM, might as well download it here. Get it while the gettin's good - I'm sure Nissan will eventually find it and shut the site down.
