Neb question about reading ECU codes.

I have a 2000 Maxima SE. Having cold start problems and it has been showing a check engine light. How do I read codes off the ECU? Ran a search and I found one post about a scanner that someone picked up at Pepboys for less than $30. Is that right? I can purchase such a tool?

Autozone does it for free. If not you can buy one.

Well, picked one up at Pepboys. It was $80 bucks though. Looks like I paid too much. Dadgum!
