I've always wanted to live on a river like that, with my boat docked in the backyard.

Sweet, I always wanted to dock my container ship in my backyard! As of now they force me to keep it at the port.

My dad has a friend whose family owns a "compound" (4 houses on a large plot of land) on the straights of Mackinaw on the Upper Peninsula side in Michigan.

I stayed a night there once. During the short time that I was there, I saw 1000' foot ships going by that were so close it seemed like you could throw a stone from his house and hit one of them.

Reminds me of something I saw while working in the Gulf Coast after Katrina/Rita.

This was in Sabine Pass, TX, at least a 1/4 mile from any body of water.

I'm still struggling to figure out how they plan to get this huge barge back in water.

WOW. Great pic J.

Also reminds me of living on Cape Cod - I could see all the way across Cape Cod Bay on a clear day from my bedroom window, and it was awesome watching the ships go through the Bourne Canal (seperates the Cape from the mainland).

Maybe the barge is gonna stay there as a attraction for the town. Maybe they should put this on their Welcome signs.

I worked for FEMA in southeast Texas from Oct to Nov 2005. That pic was taken on a Sunday drive around the area. We drove to New Orleans two weekends in a row and stopped and surveyed the area along the way.

The barge was just sitting in someone's front yard. This was a month after Rita and 2 months after Katrina. I guess people had more important things to do than worry about moving this barge...
