Oh my gosh. I just received the Navigation update DVD’s. You have to let the car run with the emergency brake on to install. It’s 4 discs that must load and it takes a total of 90 minutes. Why on earth is this not done over the air? I called and learned that the update happens every 2 years and you must pay each time. That sounds very old school and behind the times.

I finally finished installing. On disc 3 I received a message saying to start over because the installation had an error. On a hunch, I ejected the disc, cleaned it and reinserted. I then turned the car off and back on and the installation continued without me starting over. Yep it took 90 minutes.

Yeah this is normal for Nissan products. My dad's pathfinder was the same way. I've stopped updating my navigation yearly...I just use my phone (Waze & Google Maps) and those are always up to date. I haven't taken an update in like 3 years...I might do another one in the next year or two but I no longer do yearly upgrades.

I'd be interested in updating my 2012, as last week I found out there was a traffic circle on the way to a friend's house that my nav was unaware of. However, the price they want is outrageous. Anyone know if they'd sell a 2017 or 2016 update at a discount?

2018 updates are on sale for $99 right now.

Don't buy discs second hand, you will just get burned. There are people selling the disc set on eBay for $50.00. When you order the discs, they generate a PIN based on your VIN and NavID. You're dead in the water trying to use someone elses discs.

It's not done over the air due to the sheer amount of data that needs to be transferred, plus people not being in a strong signal area, plus we don't data connections on ours.

You don't have to run the engine to install the nav update...just have to turn the ignition on. I installed my 2016 update that way.

They say that as a CYA tactic to ensure the battery doesn't drain below 12.0V and/or what's required to start the car during the 90 minute process--if your battery is anywhere near good condition it is not necessary to run the engine..

Ford says run the engine when you flash a new tune, again it isn't needed is the battery is good..

If you have any concerns hook up a decent well-regulated battery charger while doing the update...

Better safe than sorry when doing any sort of software update. If the battery gets weak or anything happens during a software update, you can brick the system. It's not gonna be cheap if you ruin it.

Run the car nearly out of gas...put 1 gallon of 87 octane in and perform the update!
