Navigation System is... Annoying!

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

[RANT]Maybe I'm a little spoiled with the ease of use of My TOMTOM but the Inifiniti Navi system is a pain to operate and in most cases can't find the street I'm looking for.... I've had to resort to using my cell phone's navi to get around. When I do get an address confirmed it takes me the long way there 9 out of 10 times... like miles out of the way. Path-finding on my cell and TOMTOM kicks this things butt. I could understand if I lived out in the boon-docks but I'm in a major city. I think this is the last time I get an integrated Navi-system in any vehicle.[/RANT]

really? i have no real issues with it. sure every once in a while it won't give me the "best" directions but that's expected.

Have you tinkered with the route settings? I've found that the nissan/infiniti nav systems are quite good actually, blowing any garmin or tomtom that i've ever seen out of the water...

That's funny. This is my third car with Nav, and it is by and away the best -- clearest graphics and good directions. It may not always be the simplest route, but it does get you there in the end!

I agree that the nav works great for me and guides my perfect 95% of the time. Although there are some new streets and stores around my area that are not on the map, that is expected because most hard drive nav (and dvd) need to be updated every few years. I will probably get the updated nav maps sometime next year. At around $300 an update, I'll use my cell phone nav for 99 cents if I get lost. One funny thing did happen the other day. My wife and I wanted to go to Chilis restaurant for dinner after we did some Christmas shopping. Before we went shopping I looked online for the restaurant and found one a few miles away from where we would be. So I looked up Chilis hit start and followed the navs instructions. We were guided to a abandoned restaurant in a mini mall. As my wife was mocking me about the "awesome Infiniti nav" I keep telling her about, I used the POI info button and called the phone number listed and to my surprise a girl answered. the restaurant had moved 1/2 mile away to a new location about 2 years ago. I guess it's time for an update soon.

njcu, I have to agree with you. My Garmin Nuvi is much better than the Infinite system. The Nuvi is a year older and has not been updated and still finds locations better.

Google Mobile Maps to the BlackBerry. Works great and will even find my location if the phone GPS can't find get a signal as it will fail over to cell tower triangulation. Full Google search that is location aware as well. And it's FREE!

I need to agree that I expected much more from the Infiniti GPS. Just yesterday it wanted me to take the first exit "then make a legal u-turn" instead of just taking the second exit which would have put me in the right direction. Also, driving on 95 from DC to Jersey, I had to turn the voice "off". Almost every single exit I passed on 95, it told me to "keep left".

I find the GPS is not too bad. Although sometimes it has me do some weird things like get off an exit only to keep me going parallel to the highway, then having me get back on the next exit to the same highway. Maybe it thinks this way is quicker? I have it set to quickest route, not shortest. Also it will sometimes end my route a block or half a block too soon, and have me looking around for the address of the place I am trying to get to. In NYC you can easily miss the place you are looking for if it stops directing you a block away. Other than these things is usually gets me where I want to go. Its really for when I am going somewhere I have never been, which isn't too often.

I agree about the occasional wierd directions ... on Highway 1 near North Vancouver it likes to send me off the highway, through a complex junction, do a U-turn, back through the complex junction & back on to the same highway about 200metres down the road from where I exited & then continue on my merry way ... I'm thinking perhaps it knows another EX35 near that junction or it just likes the view It had me do this on 2 separate occasions ... if I'd been more awake the 2nd time I'd have figured what was about to happen and just continued on the highway.I've also been directed to a couple of closed stores ... perhaps it thinks I'm interested in buying vacant property.

Anyway, usually it gets it right.
