I am not sure if this will work on older Nissans but updates to the navigation maps can be done for free on 2018's by using a USB drive to down load from Nissan and update to the vehicle or if like me connecting the vehicle to wifi and downloading the updates directly to the vehicle. I am doing that right now on my 2018 Rogue. I did not see anything like this when I owned a 2016 Altima.

The 2014-2017 Rogues are based off the SD card. So this is the first time that the Rogues are based on the USB map update.

If you can download to a USB, you can download to an SD

Technically yes, but it's a lot more complicated than that. The 1st gen Rogue's have a completely different mapping system, so they can't recognize the data on a 2nd gen SD card. I suspect the same will hold true on the newer USB, it won't be backwards compatible, meaning you can't transfer it to a SD and expect it to magically work.

I don't think what you said is accurate, but in any case why would you download to a usb and transfer to a sd...just download to the sd

What Rogue One is trying to say is that the Navigation for the 2nd gens 2014-2017 models, wouldn't accept the downloaded up-to-date map update through a USB to SD. It needs to be a Genuine SD card that already has the map update with the Nissan emblem and Nissan encryption on it.

We talked about this for older rogues here:

Not sure if the newer Rogues are manufactured by someone else, and /or have a different map security system? A word from someone with a current gen Rogue that has already updated the maps would help lend clarity.

And, for what its worth, I am still running with the OE maps and have never failed to arrive at my destination due to outdated maps.

I got a mail from Nissan Navigation team marketing me to buy the $99 update software and ironically, their reasoning was "Outdated maps". Now, saying that, the manufacturer who makes the maps for the new ones should be the same, other than the design team, as this is an Nissan/Infiniti map.

Yeah, I used to get those messages as well as an annual nag screen. I ignore it. Whether to update maps or not is ultimately a personal decision. If you were using the GPS in a delivery service having updated maps would certainly be beneficial. If you live in an area of active development, or where the interstate system is being expanded, having current maps would be a benefit. For me neither is the case. I have the original SD card sitting in the head end unit. Its from 2012. Mostly I find it beneficial when I'm driving somewhere I'm not familiar. Oh, and by the way, built in GPSs are mostly going away because smartphones can be uploaded with current maps for free and used in multiple vehicles. Add android auto or the IPhone equivalent and you're done.
