Dumb question, but how well does Nav work in cities and in NYC in particualr ? I am talking specifically about reception around tall buildings in cities, as well as knowledge of one way streets.

(I have the nav in the 2008 coupe, not sure exactly what version though)

Works fine in Manhattan. It knows what streets are one way, which are two way, etc. The only issue is sometimes the fastest route they make you go to does is not really the fastest. It still gets you there, but how fast is the question

works fine here in DC....although DC has building height restrictions ("no new building may be more than 20 feet taller than the width of the street in front of it")

This is where the OEM navi system shines! When the nav system loses a signal from the satellites, it relys on the data that it receives from the compass and the speed sensing system in the car to "project" where your car is until it can re-gain a satellite signal. This is how your navi system works in tunnels, in cities, etc. Show me an aftermarket that does this!

And o yea - I've used the navi in NYC a bunch of times without any issues ever (traffic cops over Christmas not included).

Yea, I've always been surprised how my Navi continues to work in the Tunnels here even though my XM Sat shuts off. Then again, my cell does work... I think most of the tunnels had receivers installed in case of an emergency after 9/11, because I remember not being able to use cell phones in tunnels before...

and thats why it throws everything off kilter if you do the hardware hack and install an inline switch on the VSS wire.

Yup! It took me a while to find this out too - first time I thought about it was when i went through the tunnel on 95 through baltimore - i was like, how does it know where i am if im under the river....

So maybe the $2000 for the tech package isn't so bad....lol.

LOl... how many times do I have to debunk your myths about the factory Navi system???

Pioneer's systems tap into the speed sensor wire for just this reason. It uses a combination of the GPS, the speed sensor wire, and the built in internal gyro sensor to establish where you are and far you've driven when you lose connection with the satellite!

Oh yeah, and they have the 1000 other things that make them better than the factory navigation system! Nice try Marlin, but no dice on the factory Navi being anywhere near better than the top aftermarket Navi systems out there

Oh yeah, and let's not even talk about the WAAS (Wide area augmentation system) used by kenwood in their Garmin powered navi systems that use both satellites and ground stations across North America to provide for continuous location corrections as accurate as 3 meters! This technology is now being adopted by the Federal Aviation Administration to make flight approaches more accurate. Garmin set the standard for EVERYONE when it comes to navigation accuracy!

Here's a quote from another unhappy Tech package owner pointing out all the flaws in the Factory Navi system:

quote from stith coupe...

Stupid indeed. The Tech. package is def not the best $2,000 I've spent my money on. If I had known what I know now, I'd of gone with an aftermarket Navi instead of spending my money on this "stock" and "simple" package as previously stated.

The only good thing worth mentioning about the Tech Package is the Backup Camera, which I absolutely LOVE. Living in NYC and having to parallel park pretty much everywhere I go, it's the best companion for squeezing into those tight spots and worrying if I have enough room in the back. But even the backup camera you can get aftermarket.

More on the "stock" Navi... the GPS stinks, the turns come faster than you think, the Arrow representing your car on the screen is not very accurate. The directions on my Cellphone's GPS are usually better, plus when my cellphone speaks about the next "turn" it actually says the street name, not "turn right" like the Nissan GPS does. I have to look on my screen to see what street I'm turning on which is rather annoying. Lastly, there is no DVD playback like most aftermarket Navis have. Not even when you're in park. This could have come in handly the many times I've had to wait for my GF when picking her up somewhere double parked outside for 10-30 mins.

If I had to choose all over again, I'd of saved the 2g's and put it towards a Pioneer AVIC D3....

Lies! All Lies!

Haha, j/k - i was unaware that the pioneer system did integrate into the car systems...my bad there. But OEM integration FTW still. Either way, the OP already has a navi system, so it's pointless to debate which is better at this point.

the ONLY complaint i have about the factory nav is no ipod integration. The factory nav has everything that i need....it may not have anything that other people need, but for me its perfect.....and i only paid $1000 for my tech package.

+1 for OEm integration for the stock Navi... that I will give to the tech package... the steering wheel interface for aftermarket units is touchy, and doesn't work as well as I would like... blus no thumb access for bluetooth... I will concede a minor victory to the tech package
