My navigation system constantly shows a greyed out satellite icon, meaning I have no connection. I know exactly why, too - I have no antenna.

I bought the stock nav system to put into my car and I got it installed and everything works, except I don't have the gps antenna and I can't find one anywhere. Will any gps antenna that can receive a satellite signal work? Or does it have to be the exact one that's supposed to go with my system?

Im assuming that the only thing gps antennas do is compute latitude and longitude coordinates to a computer, but does that mean they all work the same? Will a stand alone antenna send the same data to the nav unit that the stock antenna would?

I was thinking something like this: http://www.sanav.com/gps_antennas/gpa/sm-76.htm

Yes any GPS antenna will work. No a regular antenna will not work efficiently. A GPS wire is similar to phone wire or CAT 5 with the exception of the ground. The ground is a braided around the contact antenna wires much like a shield. As long as you can find a wire to connect into the back of your unit you should be good.

Awesome! You should get a medal. I almost just bought a stock antenna for $200 from a junk yard.

Do you think one of these would work? http://www.sanav.com/gps_antennas/gpa/sm-76.htm

That is one of many kits that will work for you. If it doesn't come with ALL of the adapters make darn sure you get the right one for your car. Most of the kits we order for factory/ebay reinstall comes with 6-8 different connectors, some 90 degree some not. Good luck brother.

Is there a specific brand/model that you'd suggest that has the best chance of working with my car? (Better yet, would you happen to know which type of connector I would need to get?)

Nissan is one of the few brands I haven't worked on. BMW, Lexus, Jag/Ford, mazda and VW I could tell you. Jeep I hate touching, but yours cannot be all that difficult at all. I would recommend just this. Go to the dealership with your vin, OR the vin of a car with the navi unit. Get the print out of the actual plug. Then call the place your ordering from. Also if the company your ordering from is good they will know what connector you need. You will need the info of the vehical the navi came out of. Since it is just an antenna I wouldnt worry about brands, they are nearly all the same. If it were internal upgrades I would be more choosie.

This should get you started. I've got the rest of my stereo/navigation stuff on its way in the mail, so this weekend, I'll finish my own install and make a step-by-step write-up for everything, too.

If you have any questions, you're more than welcome to email me. [email protected]. I'll try to help because I know from experience that it's a ***** to go at this blind.

Do you at least have the connectors that plug into the LCD screen and navigation control unit? (The dealer quoted me $85 for the harness - which is why made my own, but my system came with the connectors attached, the wires were just cut. I bought my system from LKQonline, maybe they'd sell you the connectors for cheap if they have any I30/I35s in their yard.)
