Navigating Car Price Negotiation

Discussion of Infiniti's amazing (and underrated) sport-luxury crossovers, the EX35 and EX37. For 2014, the EX series will be renamed QX50, in line with Ininfiit's new naming conventions.

Great thread. I see some pretty phenomenal prices. According to a recent KBB review, the invoice prices for the 2009 are (in order):32,09833,38834,124 (Journey)37,882 (Journey)

Just a quick note to ask how you guys are achieving these great prices? Are you great negitiators, hard-assed, or just presenting the facts to them? How can I avoid the crazy stuff like delivery fee or destination?

Many, many thanks!

First off, you cannot avoid destination charges.

Now for the great prices, the reason is that Infiniti has marketed the EX35 as a crossover SUV, but the character and storage space are really closer to "lifted G35 hatchback with better interior".

Once most people see the EX35, they are turned off because they expect to see lots of storage space. That's why Infiniti is selling them at such a discount. However, for us who actually like what the EX is, it presents a tremendous value.

Well, that may be the case somewhere, but not here in Seattle. I talked to a salesman on Sunday who didn't have a single new unit to show me. Apparently during the previous week seven EX35s had been sold from that lot!

I was reading in a few other forums, and I think I see what piece of the pricing puzzle is not getting mentioned: the trade-in. That's gotta be it and it makes sense.

Hey bhjazz,

I may be able to save you some money on an EX35. I am in the market of selling mine. I realize you live in Seattle and I am in Los Angeles, but I may be taking a trip to Portland within the next 3 - 4 weeks.....maybe something could be worked out if you are interested.

Vehicle has the Journey package and is fully loaded, including the intelligence package. Color is white/stone leather interior with aftermarket tires and rims. Current mileage is 24,000. I also have the Infiniti Extended Service Contract ($2693/value) that is transferable to new owner. Car is always kept garaged when not in use. It is NOT the AWD model. Selling price will probably be around 32K but that is not set in stone yet. I am currently not able to upload photos to this site but I can send you photos directly if wanted.

Only reason I am selling the vehicle is because I now have a dirt bike and it is EXtremely difficult to transport the bike with the EX. I am buying a Tundra!

Let me know if you may be interested.

I got a price I was happy with by using the internet. I went to dealers within 100 miles of my home, Roseville, California, checked out the inventory to see if they had a EX I wanted to buy, I then Sent emails. I was contacted by a dealer 85 miles from my home, I was offered a price I was happy with without any haggling. I might have done better if I would have haggled, I was just happy with the offer. The offer price was about $3,500 below invoice. I was also able to save on the extended service contract. I checked prices online and was able to get my selling dealer to match the price, I paid $1635 for the Elite, 100,000 mile, 7 year, Infiniti Service Agreement. With all the technical stuff on this car, I love having the protection.

It's hard to beat the internet as a shopping tool.

2LedZep - Thanks for your kind offer. However, I really do need the AWD. I moved last fall (2008) and had no idea that there would be 50% more snow than most of the Seattle area. Ouch! Anyway, thanks much.

scottt - I'm starting down that path. I found carbuyingtips.com and fightingchance.com, so I just need some time to read up. Your price is outstanding. Congrats!

In the Sacramento California Area, We have two Infiniti Dealers, they are both sold out of EX35's. They had a total of 7 45 days ago. Not sure what is going on, but the EX35's seem to be selling a little bit better.

I would bet Nissan cut production way back and the dealers aren't being force feed EXs anymore.

Start at invoice minus incentives and be patient. Keep walking out until you get your price. Being in a hurry works against you.

It's not all negative, the reason dealers have less inventory is not just the fact that Nissan cut back production, It is also due to the car selling. I have watched dealer after dealer sell out thier inventory in the last 45 days. Two in the Sacramento, California area and one in the bay area of California. I have also noticed pre-owned EX35's selling, I have seen several local dealers sell used EX's. I think the car is catching on, it's not for everyone and won't be a high volume vehicle, but it fits the needs of people like my wife and I.
