I was finally going to break down and buy the map update for my 2008 G35 coupe. The map is "on sale" for $99, which I'm ok with. But the dealer said they charge $130 to install it. Is that reasonable? I was thinking maybe $50.

Are there any other options? I don't know what's required to install the update, but is it possible an independent Nissan-equipped shop would have the tools needed for this? $230 to get some software loaded with a few new streets and businesses seems excessive to me, but are other people paying that?

Thank for any advice.

That sounds on par to what some others I've seen are being asked. I've not updated my maps yet as it still finds everything I need.

Let us know how things come out.

You can get this on Amazon & just plug it in when you need it

Garmin nüvi 50LM 5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator with Lifetime Maps (US)

$149.99 $119.00

Even though I have Nav in my 2012 I still occasionally use my old Garmin as the wife can input info into it while driving

About a year ago, my local dealer told me $50 to install a nav update. I suggest you check around. Maybe a Nissan dealer will do it cheaper. I don't know if an independent shop could.

The reason for the charge is they have to get to the back of the head deck...labor to pull it is 30-1hr ish...

i didnt know they had to pull out the unit to update the g35 maps... interesting cause on the g37 you just pop in the cd and click update (basically)...

geting to the back of the head unit is at least a 20 min job trying not to scratch or break anything... then the labor rate at the dealer is about $100/hr so they just charging you a flat hr.

my G37 turned 3 years old in feb... i been debating on updating my map... but its like $179. If it was $99 i would have done it already.

actually, I think they have to get to the rear on the G37 too...

It's funny, I was just sent an update to the NAV software from Dodge for my SRT8. Came with instructions and a DVD...took 15min and in my garage :) Map DB updates cost $$ still...

I updated the maps in my G37 last summer when the $99 promo was running. Dealer wanted $79 for the install, but I believe I talked them down to $50 citing the ease of the job and the loyalty of the customer. :)

Thanks for the responses, guys. I'm just going to hold off because I'm too cheap. Actually, it's hard to spend double what a brand new portable unit would cost, but it would look silly to stick one on the dash when there's a built in display. It sounds like just a bad design (having to tear stuff apart to update it), and the customer is left paying for that. Oh well, live and learn....
