I'm honestly surprised as how "low tech" factory built, in-dash nav systems still are after the advent of the smartphone. I still use mine on occasion and it sure beats having your phone out, but now almost everyone owns a smartphone with navigation that is *FREE* with on-the-spot updates to maps, speed limits, POIs, etc. Just seems nuts to me to spend $100+ to get something that you already most likely have, and can get it for free.
Here's a thought. Build a nav system that has tethering capability to your phone. Tether off of your phone to download any updates. Use google maps as standardized on all nav systems so that updates (and paying for them) are a thing of the past. I know it's a loss of *some* revenue, but I honestly do not think it will ruin a car company. In fact, it might bring in more customers and can be touted as the next new thing.
