I think, "NO s***". That is the damn point. Do you really think that peope who say American, that happen to be white, think that American means white?
Some of us just don't feel the need to form our identity around our heritage. We all have different backgrounds, and there is nothing wrong with being proud of your heritage. At some point, however, one must realize that the country you live in is your nationality. Be proud of it, and if you don't like it.... do something about it.
If you want to get technical, "American" could mean, Canadian, Mexican, Brazilian, Cuban, etc... etc.. America consists of two continents... not just one country.
