hey,

k, just like everyone who gets into the craze of swapping engines, they dont know what they are getting into right ? first i wanna make sure since its from japan that means it wont pass smog emissions right ? esp since in im CA... so that means i have to find a crooked smog tester... second was wondering... with buying just the ca18det.. what else do i need ?... like fuel pumps and junk like that ?... what necessities do i need ?.. i read somewhere about what i needed but not sure is that all i need... ecu or jibberish like... by the end of summer im gonna get around 2 thousand and finally get the ca... i think thats about all i need... sorry if this has been posted before and if you guys are like rolling your eyes and gonna flame me soon... =*(

no flaming here!;)

but seriously do search...i'll help you out with some of the easier questions...

you don't need a fuel pump with the stock turbo/boost, but its a damn good idea.

you'll need an engine, transmission, ecu, complete wiring harness, intercooler, piping, downpipe, and if you have an 89-90 240, a p/s lines from a 91-93.

you'd be best off buying a front clip, but it can be pieced together.

don't know anything about smog...sorry

and yes most parts are interchangable between the ca18det (silvia) and the usdm ca18de out of the pulsar:D

good luck and welcome...please do some reading... there are many of really informative old threads (i know i started quite afew of them when i got involved with this engine!)

Or you can do it the ghetto way and bend the 89-90 lines to fit the pump :D

Also I highly recommend a good set of motor mounts. Chances are your KA ones are pretty high mileage and fairly well thrashed and the two clips that I have seen didn't have very pretty ones either.

Oh Yeah- You don't need any power steering lines... just take the whole system out. Power steering is for women and the effiminate :D

I drive my car daily as a delivery driver and I am really not bothered by the lack of power steering.

if you guys want to do yuor engine swaps for free, just head over to your friends house and ask to borrow his intercooler, then sell it promptly on ebay. this will make you 50-75 bucks, repeat10-20 times and you have enough for a CA18....right sean?? hahaha ;)

advantages of getting a full clip over just the motor set ? is it worth the extra price to get a full clip or if its cheaper should i try to piece it all together... headache or no headache, or is it over personal preference ?

and what do you guys mean by the p/s lines ?

if you have an 89-90 S13, you have to find a junked 91-93 S13 and get the power steering lines from it. Because the old ones just won't fit. (Unless you ghetto rig it of course...but come on)

Hey Vince,

I'm not sure about smog emissions rules and regulations, but I am pretty sure that the CA18DET will not pass smog. If you do go through the swap successfully and get the car running, eventually you'll have to get your car smogged. Since you live in MPK, I'm sure you'll have no problem finding a "special" smog test station around. There's are a bunch in the SGV alone.

Your second question is a bit vague. I'm not sure about what you mean by "stable." If you're planning on doing this swap yourself, I hope you did your homework. If you plan on having it done by a shop, I recommend a reputable tuner shop like Phase2, Signal or MotoRex. They could get that motor in for you at a reasonable price, 1000-1500 (guess-timation). But I'm not sure, so I suggest you call them up.

How important are motor mounts? On a scale of importance, a 1 rating is unimportant and a 10 rating is very important. Air conditioning, I would say is a 1, you don't "need" it to drive your car. Motor mounts, I would rate them as 10, because you need them, without good engine mounts your motor will be bouncing around in your engine bay and you'll feel some sicka$$ vibration throughout your car.
