I was going to turbo my 240SX when I found out my KA24E is the old type with 9.1:1 compression. I'm not going to get to turbo it without a lot of work so, I want to run some 91 or 93 octane gas and advance the ignition timing a bit to see what kind of performance I'll get.

The engine is mechanically sound, and has good compression all around. Besides my ears and timing light, how can I do this safely? Does anybody know of a "rule of thumb" to advancing ignition? I know I'm not going to get any big gains, I just want to see the difference.

what's wrong with the E motor? why cant you turbo it? "rule of thumb" would have to be leave it be. if your stock dont mess with it. if you do your "difference" that your gonna get is crapy gas milage LOL even where you live the best gas price I've see is in Milpitas. if you wanna toy around with fuel and timen' get a wide band and a safc to do it. I know from experience about the timen'

There's nothing wrong with a turbo KaE, but the high CR will require some more work and careful tuning. My SOHC isn't exactly stock. I did some head work along with an exhaust upgrade. I'm just wondering if there's a little bit left to extract. The fuel economy doesn't scare me much since this isn't exactly a daily. I might go turbo in the future though once I can afford the downtime.

Besides listening to the engine for knock, is there any tips anyone can share? The thing I wanted to learn was how octane, CR, and ignition timing go together. A waste of gas? Probably, but I was hoping to learn something out of it.

Well, I've been running 91 with timing at 20 BTDC for some time now. Fuel economy has increased from 19mpg to around 24mpg. However, I have to say that about the same time I did the switch, I plugged up my EGR.

I didn't notice too much of an increase in power. I'd say the engine response is slightly sharper. Under heavy loads, I don't hear any pinging or a woodpecker under the hood. I'm most pleased with the increase in fuel economy. I don't know if that's from removing the EGR, increased fuel grade, increased timing, or a combination of those things.

your fuel and egr delete are responsible for this. Man your car was running like crap befor?

Yeah, barely getting 19 to the gallon too. I'm wondering what played the bigger part; the fuel or the egr delete. If it's the egr then I'll just switch back to 87

my fsm says high octane is reccomended for BEST performance. take that for what its wirth.

I was able to get 45 mpg several times with spirited driving about half the time. That was in my 90sohc motor hella advanced timing via rom tune
